How Zaleski began
Zaleski was laid out in 1856 on the land of the Zaleski Mining Company as a company mining town, and named for Peter V. Zaleski, a native of Poland and a leading member of the company. It grew quickly on coal, iron and the railroad, with the Zaleski Furnace and the Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad's car shops, and was incorporated as a village in 1875. The village sits at the edge of three surviving Adena burial mounds and borders the 28,000-acre Zaleski State Forest, Ohio's second-largest state forest, which took the village's name once the iron and coal era gave way to reforestation. Zaleski's population has fallen to 230 as of 2020.

Where the name comes from
Named for Peter V. Zaleski, a native of Poland and a leading member of the Zaleski Mining Company, which laid the town out on its land in 1856.
Before the town
The Zaleski Mound Group, three surviving conical earthworks of the prehistoric Adena culture (out of an original six), stands at the edge of the village near the Zaleski United Methodist Church on Broadway Street and at the entrance to Zaleski State Forest. No historic-era (1700s) Native village or camp specific to the town site was found in the sources checked.

Stories
Three mounds where six once stood
Long before the Zaleski Mining Company laid out a town here in 1856, people of the Adena culture built six burial mounds at what is now the edge of Zaleski. Three have been destroyed over the intervening two centuries of farming and development; the three that survive — the Markham Mound, the Ranger Station Mound, and the Zaleski Methodist Church Mound — were all listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The Ranger Station Mound, at 14.4 feet the tallest of the three, had a cold cellar dug into it in the 1850s by settlers who had no idea, or no concern, that they were digging into a 2,000-year-old burial monument; the state restored it in 1959. The Methodist Church Mound, by contrast, remains largely undisturbed and may still hold its original grave goods. Destroyed mounds cannot be registered, so what stands today is a fraction of what the valley once held.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Zaleski, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.
48,797 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
