How Clinton Township, Vinton County began
Clinton Township, in southern Vinton County, was first settled about 1814 by Nathaniel Richmond, David Paine and several other families, on land that had belonged to Alexander Township, Athens County, and then to Elk Township. It was a Jackson County township when Vinton County was formed in 1850, when five tiers of its sections were transferred. Rough and hilly, with coal and iron, it held Hamden Furnace (1854) and large tracts owned by the Eagle and Vinton furnace companies; Hamden, founded as Charleston, is its village and Dundas (Arthur Junction) a railroad hamlet. The township had 886 residents in 1850, 1,724 in 1870 and 1,847 in 2020.
Settled c. 1814 (Nathaniel Richmond and seven other families), by Nathaniel Richmond, David Paine, Robert Elders, Downy Read, Robert Ward, Thomas and William McGrady and Abraham Wilbur.
Where the name comes from
Neither the 1883 nor the 1916 county history says why the township is called Clinton, and Wikipedia says only that it is one of seven Clinton Townships in Ohio. The township was formerly part of Alexander Township, Athens County, then of Elk Township.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound or trail specific to this place is recorded in the sources checked (the 1883 and 1916 county histories and Wikipedia). The land lay within the roughly two-thirds of Ohio opened to settlement by the Treaty of Greenville (1795).

Stories
The young men who went West
Clinton Township's population grew steadily from its settlement to 1870, reaching 1,724, and then slid to 1,608 by 1880. The 1883 county history explains why: for more than a dozen years the township had been about stationary because many of its younger men had gone West to the promising new country of Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas. The township's hilly farms and its coal and iron, which the same history calls almost inexhaustible, were not enough to keep them, though by 1883 it said Clinton had recovered from stagnation and was advancing again. Its school property was valued at $7,090, the highest of any township in the county outside Zaleski and McArthur.
