How Swan Township, Vinton County began

Swan Township, on the Hocking County line in northern Vinton County, was settled from about 1818 by David Johnson, Frederick Kaler, the Renders and Haynes families and others, and soon became known for some of the best farms in the county. Its first religious society, Methodist Episcopal, organized in 1818 at David Johnson's home; its first church building went up in 1830 at New Mt. Pleasant, and its first water mill was John Rager's of 1820 (1823 in the 1883 history) on Little Raccoon Creek. Iron ore along Potter's Ridge near Creola, long thought worthless, was being shipped in the 1880s. Six post offices served the township in 1883, and Wikipedia counts 892 residents in 2020.

Settled 1818, by David Johnson, Frederick Kaler, David, Peter and John Renders, and Peter, Jacob and David Haynes among the first settlers.

Stories

The oldest man in Vinton County

By the early 1880s, Swan Township could claim a distinction few others in the county could match: it was home to William Large, born in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, on February 23, 1789, and, by the time the county's history was written, past ninety-four years old and reputed the oldest man in Vinton County. His long life spanned the township's entire settled history, from its first arrivals around 1818 through its growth into some of the best farmland in the county.

Worthless rock turned to profit

Along what became known as Potter's Ridge, near the village of Creola, Swan Township sat on large iron ore deposits. For years before anyone understood what the dark, heavy rocks actually were, local settlers dismissed them as worthless and used them mainly to fill mud holes in the township's roads. Only later, as the value of the ore became known, did mining companies take an interest, and by the 1880s large quantities were being dug and shipped commercially from Creola, a reversal that turned a roadside nuisance into an export.
