How Morrow County began
Morrow County was organized by the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1848, from parts of Delaware, Marion, Knox and Richland counties after a contentious, decades-long push by residents of the border townships who found their existing county seats too far to reach. It was named for Jeremiah Morrow, a Warren County farmer-statesman who had been Ohio's first congressman, a U.S. senator and the state's ninth governor (1822-1826), and who died in 1852. Mount Gilead, platted in 1824 as the village of Whetstone and renamed by popular vote in 1832, won a bitter fight among rival townships to become the new county seat. The land itself sits astride the Greenville Treaty Line of 1795, which still crosses the county near Cardington and once marked the border between the United States and Indian country; the northern townships were not opened to settlement until the further land cessions of 1817-1818, so Wyandot, Seneca and Miami families continued to camp, hunt and fish seasonally in Morrow County for twelve to fifteen years after the first white settlers arrived. The county is rural and agricultural today, known best outside its borders as the birthplace of President Warren G. Harding, near Blooming Grove, and as home to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Mount Gilead began as Whetstone, a crossroads settlement in what was then Marion County; Lewis Hardenbrook arrived in 1817, and Judge Jacob Young platted an 80-lot village around a public square in 1824. Charles Webster built the first cabin on the platted site in December 1824 and became the settlement's first postmaster. In 1832 residents voted to rename the growing village Mount Gilead -- chosen, by local tradition, because some residents had come from a Mount Gilead in Virginia -- and Henry Ustick platted a second addition of 70 lots and a second public square the same year. The village was incorporated by the state legislature in 1839. When Morrow County was organized in 1848, Mount Gilead won out over rival townships in a sharp contest for the county seat; the Morrow County Courthouse, a Greek Revival building designed by David Auld and the firm of Auld & Miller, was raised in 1852 and completed July 15, 1854, replacing makeshift quarters in a two-story frame building and the local Baptist church. The courthouse was enlarged and its facade updated in 1896, and gained a new rear courtroom wing paid for with a Depression-era federal grant; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 25, 1974.

The county was named for Jeremiah Morrow (1771-1852), a Warren County farmer who served in the Northwest Territory's legislature and as Ohio's first congressman, then as a U.S. senator, and as the ninth governor of Ohio from 1822 to 1826 -- a career that made him one of the most prominent Ohio political figures of the early statehood era by the time the new county was carved out and named for him in 1848, four years before his death in 1852.
