Life story

Dawn Powell was born in Mount Gilead in 1896. She wrote sharp, funny novels about Midwestern small towns and about people who move to New York.

From 1939 she worked with editor Maxwell Perkins at Scribner's. Her first big commercial success was A Time to Be Born in 1942, and her own favorite was Dance Night (1930).

She was a National Book Award nominee in 1963 and won the American Academy's Marjorie Peabody Waite Award in 1964. She lived in Greenwich Village and died there in 1965. Her books went out of fashion until Gore Vidal's 1987 essay in the New York Review of Books brought them back; she entered the New York State Writers Hall of Fame in 2015.
