How Mount Gilead began
Mount Gilead began in 1817 as a small settlement on Whetstone Creek called Whetstone, then in Marion County. Judge Jacob Young laid the village out formally in 1824, and in 1832 residents voted to rename it Mount Gilead after a Virginia town some early settlers had come from; the village incorporated in 1839. When Morrow County was carved out of Delaware, Marion, Knox and Richland counties in 1848, Mount Gilead was chosen almost unanimously as the county seat. It is now home to the county courthouse, the Morrow County Fairgrounds, and Mount Gilead State Park, and the village calls itself the geographic center of Ohio's population.
Settled 1817, platted 1824, incorporated 1839, by Lewis Hardenbrook (first settler, 1817); Judge Jacob Young (platted the village, 1824).
Where the name comes from
The site was first called Whetstone, for Whetstone Creek, which the Wyandot and other Ohio peoples had earlier called the Olentangy. In 1832 residents voted between 'Warsaw' and 'Mount Gilead'; Mount Gilead won and was said to honor a town in Virginia that some early settlers had come from.
Before the town
No village-specific Native American site or event is recorded for Mount Gilead itself, but the settlement sits on the Owl Creek Trail (also called the Old War Trace), a route used by Wyandot and Delaware (Lenape) people through the 1700s and early 1800s, which ran from Upper Sandusky through Caledonia and Mount Gilead to Fredericktown and on to Owl Creek (the Kokosing River) and the Walhonding, connecting to Newcomerstown. The 1911 county history records an 'Indian village on the Whetstone' near the present Cardington-Mount Gilead area and states that Mound Builders had settlements in Morrow County long before the historic tribes; it gives no detail specific to the Mount Gilead village site.
Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware).

Stories
The opera house above the fire station
In 1876, the national centennial year, Mount Gilead businessmen built Levering Hall at 12 South Main Street. It was first planned purely as a village hall and firehouse, but before construction started local merchants pushed to put storefronts across its front section, so the finished two-part Italianate building carried shops and a fire bay downstairs and a genuine opera hall upstairs, designed by architect William Miller. That hall served as Mount Gilead's community theater for decades, hosting traveling shows and local performances until the late 1940s, when it finally closed. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and still stands on Main Street as one of the village's four NRHP-listed properties.
Choosing a name twice
The village that became Mount Gilead carried another name before it settled on one. Settlers in 1817 called their new cabins on Whetstone Creek simply Whetstone, after the stream (itself an English rendering of a name applied to what is now called the Olentangy). When residents voted in 1832 on a permanent name, the choice came down to 'Warsaw' or 'Mount Gilead'; Mount Gilead, honoring a town in Virginia that some settlers had left behind, won the vote.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
