Did you know
  • Hammertown Lake, Jackson's working reservoir, sits behind a 60-foot-high, 1,200-foot-long earthen dam commissioned in 1954 and still owned by the city; it holds about 4,200 acre-feet at normal pool.
  • Jackson does not blend its two lakes: Hammertown is the source and Jisco is the backup, per the city's own 2025 water quality report - a common misreading of this system.
  • The waterline the state paid $1.6 million to replace on South Street had been in the ground since about 1898 - galvanized setters, potential lead joints, and so odd-sized the city struggled to find parts when it broke.
  • About a quarter of the water Jackson treats never reaches a customer: the state put the city's water-loss rate at 24% when it awarded the 2023 waterline grant.
  • In June 2025 Jackson had to mail every customer a violation notice - not for anything in the water, but for missing the federal deadline to inventory its lead service lines.

History6
  • 1898The South Street waterline (Main Street to Ohio Avenue) is installed - still in service 123 years later, with galvanized setters and potential lead joints, when the state funded its replacement.
  • 1954Hammertown Lake Dam is commissioned - a 60-foot-high, 1,200-foot-long earthen embankment designed by Jones and Henry Engineers, built for water supply and owned by the City of Jackson.
  • 2003Ohio EPA completes the Source Water Assessment for the Jackson public water system.
  • 2021Jackson receives a $1.01 million Ohio BUILDS grant (Round 2) for the Mill Street Area Sewer Extension, serving about 24 unsewered households.
  • 2023Jackson receives a $1,625,046 Ohio BUILDS grant (Round 5) to replace the failing 1898 South Street waterline; the award notes the city's 24% water-loss rate.
  • 2024The city fails to submit its initial lead and galvanized service line inventory to Ohio EPA by the October 16, 2024 federal deadline - a drinking water violation.

78% of these days are measurements from a gauge inside 45640 (Jackson); the rest are estimated from the nearest gauges around it.

49,765 days of records, 1890-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
