How Milton Township, Jackson County began
Milton Township, in northeastern Jackson County, was one of the county's original townships and among its earliest settled, with recorded settlers arriving as early as 1806. Named for the English poet John Milton, it is dominated historically by the Buckeye Furnace, a charcoal iron furnace that operated from 1852 to 1894 and anchored the company town of Buckeye; today the restored furnace complex and its nearby 1872 covered bridge are run by the Ohio History Connection. The city of Wellston occupies much of the township's northwestern corner.
Settled 1806 (James Andrews, an early justice of the peace), by original organizers of Jackson County.
Where the name comes from
Named for John Milton (1608-1674), the English poet; it is one of five Milton Townships in Ohio.

Well after Native removal, the township was the site of a Civil War-era engagement in July 1863: land in Section 19 is listed on the National Register as the Battle of Berlin Heights Engagement Site, part of Confederate general John Hunt Morgan's raid through Ohio.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee.

Stories
The furnace and the bridge that outlived it
Buckeye Furnace went into operation in 1852 on a 270-acre site in Milton Township, one of the charcoal iron furnaces of the Hanging Rock Iron Region, and supported the company town of Buckeye that grew up beside it. A covered bridge, built in 1872, carried the town's traffic across the creek. The furnace shut down in 1894 and Buckeye the settlement eventually disappeared, but the bridge kept carrying local traffic for decades afterward, and both furnace and bridge survive today, restored and run by the Ohio History Connection.
