How Hamilton Township, Jackson County began
Hamilton Township, in the southwest corner of Jackson County on the Scioto County line, was surveyed by Elias Langdon in April 1799 but was not made a township until December 6, 1825, when the county commissioners cut it from Scioto Township (Wikipedia and one passage of the county history say 1816; the commissioners' own journal, printed in the same history, says 1825). It is named for Alexander Hamilton. The 1900 county history singles out its high hills, with Jefferson Township's, as bearing mounds that its author speculated might be the oldest human relics in the Ohio valley. Population was 415 in 1840, 819 in 1880 and 545 in 2020; there is no village.

Where the name comes from
Named for Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury; the county history groups Hamilton with Jackson and Clinton as townships named for 'three distinguished Americans'.
Before the town
The 1900 county history says some of the mounds on the high hills of Hamilton and Jefferson townships 'may be the oldest human relics in the Ohio valley'. The author's reasoning is a theory, not a finding: that when the Cincinnati ice dam backed a glacial lake over southern Ohio, only three high ridges stood out as islands, two of them in Jackson County, so people of that age must have taken refuge on them. No mound is named, mapped or dated, and no historic-era village or treaty event is placed in the township.

Stories
Islands in an Ice Age lake
County historian Williams, writing in 1900, wondered how long people had lived near the Scioto salt licks. If man had appeared before the end of the Ice Age, he argued, the floods of that period had turned southern Ohio into a lake, backed up by the Cincinnati ice dam, with only three high ridges left standing as islands, two of them in Jackson County. 'It is not too violent a presumption', he wrote, that people of that day sought refuge on those highlands, and if so, 'some of the mounds on the high hills of Jefferson and Hamilton townships may be the oldest human relics in the Ohio valley.' It is a speculation, not archaeology: Ohio's mounds are generally attributed to the Adena, Hopewell and Fort Ancient peoples of the last three thousand years, and none of those on Hamilton's hills is named or dated. But the passage is the only thing the county history says about this corner of the county, and it records that the early residents already thought of its ridges as ancient ground.
