How Liberty Township, Jackson County began
Liberty Township lies in the western part of Jackson County and holds part of the city of Jackson in its southeast corner. Its land was surveyed by Elias Langdon in May 1798 (township 7, range 19) and June 1801 (township 6, range 20), but no organization date or name explanation was found for the township itself. The 1900 county history records a human skeleton in a rock shelter on Captain Samuel White's land, found about 1870, and, near Rock Hill church, a lump of lead found about 1860 at the foot of 'Lead Rock', which fed a tradition of Indians digging lead on Rock Run. The township counted 474 people in 1840, 1,784 in 1880 and 1,811 in 2020.
Where the name comes from
No source gives a specific naming story for this township; it is one of twenty-five Liberty Townships in Ohio, a common patriotic name. The Jackson County GenWeb name-origins page does not cover it.
Before the town
The 1900 county history records two items in Liberty Township. About thirty years before 1900 (so about 1870) a skull and other parts of a human skeleton were found in the ashes of a rock shelter on the land of Captain Samuel White; it does not say the remains were Native, though the county's rock-shelter ash floors are prehistoric camps. And near Rock Hill church, as late as 1860, William Yerian found a lump of good lead at the foot of Lead Rock, and his father Daniel Yerian found another; the historian reports a tradition 'that the Indians used to dig lead on Rock run, but this may be taken for what it is worth'. Beyond that the township's Native record is the county's: Shawnee territory, the Scioto salt licks east near present Jackson, and the county's mound-builder and rock-shelter record.

Stories
A lump of lead at Lead Rock
Near Rock Hill church in Liberty Township a low rocky hill called Lead Rock stands joined to the main hill by a neck. About 1860, as the county historian was told in 1895, William Yerian, the son of Daniel Yerian, found a lump of lead in the creek bottom at its base; he took it to Jackson, where it proved to be of good quality, and his father found another lump nearby. No vein was ever found, and the lead was never explained. The find fed a tradition that the Indians used to dig lead on Rock Run, which the historian passed on with the warning that it 'may be taken for what it is worth'. It joined a second legend, from Bloomfield Township, of an Indian lead mine near Keystone Furnace; geologist Caleb Briggs had written in 1837 that the rumors of lead in southern Ohio had produced only loose lumps on the surface.
