How Washington Township, Belmont County began
Washington Township, the last township erected in Belmont County, was formed in 1831 from parts of York and Wayne townships in the county's southeastern tier; it is one of forty-three Washington Townships statewide in Ohio, presumably named, as most are, for George Washington. Settlement along Captina Creek began in 1797, and the Danford family, who arrived from Washington County, Pennsylvania around 1797-98, became the township's most prominent pioneer family; Ambrose Danford, who came to the territory at age thirteen, was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1813. The township holds several mounds and rocks bearing Native pictographs. It has no incorporated village; Alledonia, an unincorporated community along State Route 148, sits at its center.
Settled 1797 (along Captina Creek), incorporated 1831, by Belmont County commissioners, from parts of York and Wayne townships.
Where the name comes from
No documented explanation of the township's name was found in the sources consulted, though the near-universal naming of Ohio's many Washington Townships for George Washington makes that the overwhelmingly likely source here as well; this is not independently confirmed for this specific township.
Before the town
A number of mounds are recorded within Washington Township, prominent among them one about thirty feet in diameter at its base found a few rods from the residence of R. W. Linsey; the 1880 county history also records a few rocks bearing Native pictographs elsewhere in the township, though without naming a specific culture or period. No named Native village or trail specific to the township was found.

Timeline
- — The first settlements in what becomes Washington Township begin along Captina Creek, then dense wilderness; emigrants chiefly from Pennsylvania and Maryland follow soon after.
- — Samuel and William Danford, sons of Peter Danford of New Jersey and Washington County, Pennsylvania, arrive and locate on section 4, clearing ground, building a cabin, and planting corn before returning east for the rest of the family; their younger brother Ambrose, then thirteen, is left behind to guard the claim.
- — Reuben Perkins, born on the Susquehanna River in 1767, migrates to Belmont County and settles near Captina Creek with his wife and six children, one of only three families then living in that neighborhood alongside Daniel Bean and Robert Latty.
- — Ambrose Danford marries Mary Delaney on November 18, recorded on the flyleaf of a family copy of Locke's 'Essay on the Human Understanding'; he later enters several hundred acres in section 26 and is elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1813, serving one term.

Stories
Little Ambrose guards the claim
When Peter Danford's sons Samuel and William first reached the land on Captina Creek that would become Washington Township, they left their youngest brother Ambrose, then just thirteen, alone at the cabin to tend the family's newly planted corn while they went back to Washington County, Pennsylvania for the rest of the household. His brothers called him 'Little Ambrose' and, family tradition recorded, would give him the best of their scarce provisions, musty bread and tainted bear meat included, even when it meant going hungrier themselves. Ambrose grew into a man six feet four inches tall who never forgot the kindness, married Mary Delaney in 1807 at twenty-three, entered several hundred acres of the rich Captina bottomland, and was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1813. He died in 1863, remembered by the county historian as an excellent example of the self-made pioneer, blunt in speech, sound in judgment, and fond of a good story, especially one told at his own expense.
A river once thick with fish
Old settlers described Captina Creek, before decades of farming altered its banks, as remarkably clear and full of life: yellow, white, and black perch, salmon, sturgeon, eels several feet long, and multiple varieties of suckers all darted through its waters, and in spawning season fish were said to be so plentiful that large numbers could be clubbed in the shallow ripples. Elias Perkins once shot a sixteen-pound salmon with a bow and arrow; his relative Reuben Perkins, Sr. shot two 125-pound river fish, thought to have been catfish, as they sunned themselves on a rock at the creek's mouth. One deep pool, nicknamed the 'Death Hole,' ran twenty-nine feet down, and only Reuben Perkins, Jr., an expert swimmer, and two others could dive to its bottom and surface again with a pebble in their mouths to prove it; Perkins himself, after nearly wedging fast between two rocks on one such dive, declared it his last.
The schoolmaster who poked his log into the chimney
A pioneer named Reed, quoted in the 1903 county history, remembered the first schoolteacher he ever heard of in the Captina country, an old man named Josiah Rogers, who kept school in a log house near where the township now votes. Rogers took his pay in anything edible and boarded in his own cabin. The neighbors made fun of him for laziness: he never chopped a stick of firewood, but cut a hole in his chimney and simply poked in the end of a long log, and the water he used came from the hole where he had dug the clay to daub his cabin. He was nonetheless a strict man. Reed recalled that Rogers whipped some boys for snowballing and gave each of them exactly four strokes, for reasons no one could explain.
