How Beallsville began
Beallsville was organized by Citizen Beall in 1824 within Sunsbury Township, growing over the nineteenth century into a small farming village that peaked at 601 residents in 1980. The village is remembered nationally for its losses in the Vietnam War: five of its citizens were killed in action during the 1960s and a sixth died of wounds on March 9, 1969, giving Beallsville the highest per-capita combat death toll of any place in the United States during that war. Today it holds around 350 to 400 residents and remains centered on the crossroads Beall laid out two centuries ago.

Where the name comes from
Beallsville was named for its founder, Citizen Beall, who organized the town in 1824.
Before the town
No source consulted names a Native American village, camp or mound specific to Beallsville. The surrounding Sunsbury Township lay within the broader hunting and travel range of the Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and Mingo peoples before the Treaty of Greenville (1795), but no source found ties a named site to the village itself.

Stories
A village's disproportionate loss
Beallsville, laid out by Citizen Beall in 1824 as an ordinary farming crossroads in Sunsbury Township, never held more than a few hundred people at any point in its recorded history. That small size is exactly what made its Vietnam War losses so statistically extreme: five young men from the village were killed in action during the 1960s, and a sixth, wounded in the war, died of those wounds on March 9, 1969. Together the six deaths amounted to more than one percent of the village's entire population -- the worst per-capita combat loss suffered by any community in the United States during the Vietnam War, a distinction that brought national reporters to a village whose name, before the war, had rarely traveled beyond Monroe County.
