How Mead Township, Belmont County began
Mead Township was erected from parts of Pultney and York townships on January 3, 1815, and named, by Associate Judge David Lockwood, in honor of his mother, whose maiden name was Mead; Lockwood, a Revolutionary War veteran who had been held as a British prisoner for ten months, had been granted the liberty of naming the new township. The Dille family made the earliest recorded settlement in the township, on the Ohio River bottoms opposite Moundsville around 1793-94, building a blockhouse for protection during a period of hostility with Native residents; eight human skeletons, thought to be Native remains, were later found buried beneath a slipped rock in the same bottom. An 1880 county history records a rich settlement chapter, grist and coal mills, and a church history for the township. Most of the village of Shadyside sits within the township's northeastern corner along the river; the village's own history, including the 1990 flash flood, is covered under its own entry.
Settled about 1793-94 (Dille family, Ohio River bottoms opposite Moundsville), incorporated January 3, 1815, by Belmont County commissioners, from parts of Pultney and York townships.
Where the name comes from
Named for Mead, the maiden name of the mother of Associate Judge David Lockwood, a Revolutionary War veteran and pioneer settler who was granted the liberty of naming the new township.
Before the town
No named Native village, camp, or trail specific to Mead Township was found in the sources consulted, but the 1880 county history records that eight human skeletons, believed possibly to be Native remains, were found buried on the J. L. Jones farm in Dille's bottom, crushed beneath a large rock that had evidently slipped from its place, apparently while the people sheltered beneath its projection. The Dille family's earliest settlement here, about 1793-94, required a blockhouse for protection from what the source calls 'the unmerciful attacks of the savages,' reflecting the still-contested state of this ground in the years just before the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. The township's Ohio River frontage, facing Marshall County, West Virginia, lay within the general eighteenth-century Lenape, Shawnee, Wyandot, and Mingo travel and hunting range.

Timeline
- — The Dille family makes the first recorded settlement in what becomes Mead Township, on the Ohio River bottoms opposite Moundsville, building a blockhouse or fort for protection; the bottomland afterward takes the Dille name. Martin Shewey, Major James Smith, and Leonard Coleman and their families settle the same bottom about the same time.
- — David Lockwood, a Revolutionary War veteran born in New York in 1762 who had been held prisoner by the British for ten months, migrates from near Wheeling Creek, West Virginia, and settles in Dille's bottom, section six.
- — David Lockwood is made one of Belmont County's first Associate Judges, a position he fills for a number of years; he is later granted the liberty of naming Mead Township, choosing his mother's maiden name.
- — Mead Township is erected from parts of York and Pultney townships on January 3, per the Belmont County commissioners' record, and named Mead at David Lockwood's choosing.
- — One of the township's first school buildings is erected on section 32.
- — David Lockwood builds what is claimed as the first grist mill in Dille's bottom.
- — A school is built on the Belville ridge about 1822-23, one of the township's first.
- — Benjamin Lockwood builds a grist mill on Pipe Creek (the 1903 county history says 1834), about a mile from the Ohio River, later fitted with a steam engine in 1845; its boiler bursts in 1868, killing two men, Thomas King and engineer Isaac McCabe.
- — William Lamdon organizes a Methodist class of eighteen members at Wegee; it meets in Pultney bottom and private houses until it builds a 30x40 frame church in 1835 on ground given by John Albright, replaced by a new building dedicated September 1, 1878.
- — Benjamin Lockwood donates a site on section 18 for the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church, completed and dedicated by Rev. Alfred Paul of Wheeling before the year's end.
- — Archibald McGrew and Robert Hammond build the Businessburg grist mill on Pipe Creek; it ran on water power for seven years until steam was added in 1855.
- — Thomas A. Groves organizes the Bethel Presbyterian society with ten members; its 30x40 church is built and dedicated in 1857 and enlarged in 1871.
- — Steam is installed at the Businessburg mill, which then passes through Allen Ramsey, James Shipman, Sylvester Creamer, David McGrew, Isaac Richner and Thomas McNiece over the next 25 years.
- — Thomas White organizes the Pultney Methodist Episcopal class with twenty-five members; a 30x50 frame church follows in 1857 on ground given by Samuel Hoffer.
- — Samuel Heath and Samuel McGrew build the Wegee grist mill.
- — The Lockwood and Burly coal bank (later the Pipe Creek Coal and Iron Company) and Col. Thompson's coal works, leased to Watson, Smith & Co., both open, each producing roughly 150,000 to 200,000 bushels of coal a year.
- — The township's population is about 2,000; it contains two brick and eleven frame school houses, with school in session nearly nine months a year and five teachers usually employed.
- — The Great Flood on Pipe Creek raises the water fifteen feet, submerges Businessburg, carries away many houses and nearly destroys the village.
- — The township census is 1,705, down from about 2,000 in 1880; it is 1,726 in 1900.
Stories
Named for a mother, sworn to on a Bible
When Belmont County's commissioners agreed in January 1815 to carve a new township out of Pultney and York, they left the honor of naming it to David Lockwood, one of the county's first Associate Judges and a Revolutionary War veteran who had once been held by the British as a prisoner of war for ten months before his release. Lockwood, who had settled in Dille's bottom around 1800 after emigrating from near Wheeling Creek, Virginia, chose to name the new township not for a battle, a founder, or a faraway place, but for his own mother, whose maiden name was Mead. He lived to the age of seventy-eight, dying in 1840; his wife survived him until 1863, dying at seventy-two.
A bear, a hunter, and a hard-won escape
Among the reminiscences the 1880 county history collected from Mead Township's old settlers was an account, from Benjamin Lockwood, of an early hunt gone wrong. Samuel Worley and Thomas Dison set out together up McMahon's Creek but separated before long; Dison came upon a large bear and fired, and when the animal fell he approached, believing it dead. The bear rose on its hind legs instead and seized him by the thigh, holding on with a crushing grip. Dison managed to reach his tomahawk and beat the animal until it finally released its hold and died, after which he had to pry its jaws open to free himself. Badly wounded and nearly exhausted, he crawled on his hands and one knee about a mile to his grandmother's house to recover. His hunting partner, taking the opposite side of the creek that day, killed four deer on the same outing.
