How Adams Township, Monroe County began
Adams Township, organized March 6, 1826 in the county's interior, grew up around the Atkinson family, five brothers who settled at the mouth of Sunfish Creek in the early 1800s. Its main village, Cameron, began life as Jamestown, founded by James Atkinson in 1837, and passed through a post-office name (Rocky Narrows) before settling on Cameron; by 1880 it held 170 residents. An early oil mill built by the Sinclair brothers burned after only a few years of operation, a small early casualty in a township otherwise built around Disciples, Methodist, Presbyterian and Christian congregations.

Where the name comes from
The origin of the township name Adams is not recorded. Its village, first platted as Jamestown in 1837 (1838 per Wikipedia) after founder James Atkinson, was later renamed Cameron, a name transferred from Cameron, West Virginia, according to Wikipedia.
Before the town
No source names a Native American village, camp or mound specific to Adams Township. The area lay within the broader hunting and travel range of the Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and Mingo peoples before the Treaty of Greenville (1795), but no source ties a named site to the township.

Five Atkinson brothers at Sunfish Creek
Charles, James, Mitchell, William and Isaac Atkinson, five brothers, settled near the mouth of Sunfish Creek around 1800. James later moved to Cameron, which was organized by James Atkinson in 1837 and was then called Jamestown. Charles, father of Stephen Atkinson Sr., moved to a farm earlier owned by Michael Boughner. Mitchell and Isaac moved to Seneca Township, and William may later have moved to Green Township.
