How Sunsbury Township, Monroe County began
Sunsbury Township was formally organized June 24, 1819, though John Linn and Abner Barrett are credited with building the first cabin two or three years earlier, around 1812. The township's main village, Beallsville, was laid out by Citizen Beall in 1824 and later received national attention for an entirely different reason: during the Vietnam War it lost more than one percent of its population in combat, the highest per-capita loss of any place in the United States. Early township life centered on water-powered mills along Piney Fork and a wave of church-building that produced eight congregations by 1881.

Where the name comes from

Before the town
No source consulted names a Native American village, camp or mound specific to Sunsbury Township. The area lay within the broader hunting and travel range of the Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and Mingo peoples before the Treaty of Greenville (1795), but no source found ties a named site to the township.

Beallsville's Vietnam War toll
Beallsville, the village Citizen Beall laid out in Sunsbury Township in 1824, is remembered nationally for a grim distinction from a war fought a century and a half after its founding. During the years of heaviest American involvement in Vietnam, the small farming village lost five citizens killed in action, and a sixth died of his wounds on March 9, 1969. For a village that never held more than a few hundred residents, that toll -- more than one percent of its population -- was the worst per-capita loss of life suffered by any community in the United States during the war, a fact that drew journalists and historians to a village that would otherwise have remained known only locally.
