How Mount Pleasant Township, Jefferson County began
Mount Pleasant Township was organized March 3, 1807 from Short Creek Township, on high rolling land underlain by limestone and coal. Robert Carothers and Jesse Thomas settled the land that became the village of Mount Pleasant in 1796 and jointly laid it out in 1804. Pennsylvania Quaker Nathan Updegraff arrived in 1802, sat in Ohio's 1802 constitutional convention at Chillicothe, and became a leading figure of the Short Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends; his son Daniel Updegraff was an outspoken early abolitionist, and Daniel's wife Rebecca Updegraff preached as a Quaker minister for fifty years across the country. At its industrial peak the township ran twenty-three mills along Short Creek. The village of Mount Pleasant itself, the center of this Quaker and antislavery history, has its own entry.
Settled 1796 (Robert Carothers and Jesse Thomas), platted 1804 (village of Mount Pleasant), incorporated March 3, 1807, by Jefferson County Commissioners, from Short Creek Township.
Where the name comes from
Named for the village of Mount Pleasant at its center; the specific reasoning behind the village name was not given in the sources consulted.
Before the town
No source reviewed records a specific Native American village, mound or documented encounter within Mount Pleasant Township. The township's first settlers arrived in 1796, the year after the Treaty of Greenville ended the Northwest Indian War and opened the region to settlement, and the township was formally organized in 1807.
Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee, Wyandot.
Timeline
- — Robert Carothers and Jesse Thomas settle the land on which the village of Mount Pleasant later stands.
- — Col. McCune, John Tygart, Col. Joseph McKee, William Finney, David Robinson, John Pollock and Irish immigrant Benjamin Scott, who keeps the settlement's first hotel, arrive.
- — Pennsylvania Quaker Nathan Updegraff arrives and later sits in Ohio's 1802 constitutional convention at Chillicothe; he becomes a leading figure of the Short Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends and builds the township's first mill.
- — Carothers and Thomas lay out the village of Mount Pleasant on their 1796 settlement land.
- — Mount Pleasant Township is organized March 3 from Short Creek Township.
- — Daniel Updegraff, Nathan's son and an early outspoken antislavery voice, marries Rebecca Taylor, who goes on to preach as a Quaker minister for fifty years across the country.
- — Rix Patterson bequeaths $5,012.17 as a permanent fund to support township schools.
- — Elwood Ratcliff lays out Trenton, a mile west of Mount Pleasant village; it remains a quiet hamlet of about 100 people into the 20th century, with the post office known as Emerson.
- — Nathan Updegraff plats a site on Short Creek under the name Annadelphia, home to a paper mill and two grist mills; never occupied as a town, it lies dormant until 1889, when a new plat renamed Dillon, later Dillonvale, is made following the arrival of the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad and the opening of coal mines -- Dillonvale has its own entry.
Stories
Twenty-three mills on one creek
Short Creek's flow through Mount Pleasant Township supported, at its nineteenth-century peak, no fewer than twenty-three mills, the county history records -- an extraordinary concentration for a single waterway, built to grind the wheat and corn of one of the county's most fertile limestone-soil townships. Nathan Updegraff, the Pennsylvania Quaker who had helped write Ohio's first constitution at Chillicothe in 1802, built the township's first mill on the creek and later converted it from a paper mill to a flouring mill as demand shifted. The reliance on water power did not survive the railroad era intact: as rail transportation changed how the region moved goods, the township's farmers pivoted from grain growing toward wool growing and stock raising, and the twenty-three mills gradually fell silent one by one.
A dormant plat that waited seventy-three years
Not every plat in Mount Pleasant Township became a town right away. In 1816, the same general era that saw the township's Quaker meeting houses and its first mills built, Nathan Updegraff laid out a site on Short Creek he called Annadelphia, home to a pioneer paper mill and two grist mills, including an imposing stone structure known as the Updegraff-Barkhurst mill. Nobody built on the plat itself, and the place stayed a quiet millpond corner of the township for nearly three-quarters of a century. It took the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad's arrival in 1889 and a wave of coal mining to finally fill in Updegraff's old plat -- renamed Dillon, then Dillonvale -- which by 1910 had become the fourth-largest town in Jefferson County, an explosive coda to a plat that had waited seventy-three years for its moment. Trenton, a smaller hamlet a mile west of Mount Pleasant village laid out in 1815 by Elwood Ratcliff, took the opposite path, remaining the quiet hundred-person hamlet it had always been.
