How Symmes Township, Hamilton County began

Symmes Township, named for Judge John Cleves Symmes of the Symmes Purchase, organized on January 19, 1822, though township histories also cite 1824. Its southern end holds Camp Dennison, land German immigrants settled by 1796 and where Revolutionary War veteran Christian Waldschmidt built a stone house in 1804; that house became the command headquarters of a major Union Army training camp the state stood up there in 1861, named for wartime governor William Dennison. The Little Miami Railroad reached the township in 1853, and after a long rural stretch -- just 1,115 residents in 1850 -- the township suburbanized fast after World War II, growing 138 percent in the 1950s alone to 7,621 by 1960 and reaching 15,642 by 2020, all while twice beating back attempts (1994 and 1995) to merge it into a neighboring city.

Settled 1796 (German immigrant settlement at Camp Dennison), incorporated January 19, 1822 (some sources cite 1824), by organized within the Symmes Purchase and named for Judge John Cleves Symmes.

Where the name comes from

Symmes Township was named for Judge John Cleves Symmes (1742-1814), the New Jersey judge and Continental Congressman whose Symmes Purchase of roughly 311,000 to 330,000 acres between the Great and Little Miami rivers opened most of what became Hamilton, Butler, and Warren counties to settlement.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, or documented encounter specific to Symmes Township itself was found in the sources consulted; the township's land was part of the Symmes Purchase, ground the Miami and Shawnee held and used for hunting and travel before the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — German immigrants settle the Little Miami River valley land that becomes Camp Dennison, in the township's southern end.
  2. — Christian Waldschmidt, a Revolutionary War veteran, builds a stone house at Camp Dennison; it has eight fireplaces and original chestnut floors and still stands.
  3. — Symmes Township is organized, named for Judge John Cleves Symmes.
  4. — Township population is 1,115.
  5. — The Little Miami Railroad is completed, connecting the township to Cincinnati.
  6. — The state establishes Camp Dennison as a Union Army training and recruiting post on April 24, surveyed by Captain William S. Rosecrans and named for Governor William Dennison; the Waldschmidt House becomes the camp commandant's headquarters and its barn briefly serves as the camp hospital.
  7. — More than 50,000 Union soldiers muster in or out of service at Camp Dennison over the war, with as many as 12,000 in camp at once; after the Battle of Shiloh a 200-plus-bed hospital operates there, and the nearby Waldschmidt Cemetery temporarily holds 340 Union and 31 Confederate dead.
  8. — Camp Dennison deactivates in September, after the war's end.
  9. — Township population reaches 7,621, up 138 percent in a decade.
  10. — Two surviving Camp Dennison buildings, including the Waldschmidt House, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Waldschmidt-Camp Dennison Historic District.

  12. — Township population reaches 15,642.

Stories

A farmhouse that became a war camp's headquarters

Christian Waldschmidt, a Revolutionary War veteran who had settled the Little Miami valley with other German immigrants by 1796, built a stone house on his land in 1804, a substantial home with eight fireplaces meant to last generations. It did, but not in the way he could have planned: when Ohio governor William Dennison authorized a Union Army training camp on the same ground in April 1861, laid out in a hurry by then-Captain William S. Rosecrans, Waldschmidt's own house became the camp commandant's headquarters, and when the first soldiers arrived without proper shelter, the camp's hospital was set up on the ground floor of the Waldschmidt family barn -- the horses moved out, the manure cleared, and fresh straw laid down for the sick. Over the next four years more than 50,000 Union soldiers passed through Camp Dennison, as many as 12,000 there at once, until it deactivated in September 1865. The Waldschmidt House survived the war and survived the century and a half after it too, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 as one of the last physical traces of a camp that had briefly made a German farm family's homestead the nerve center of Ohio's war effort.
