How Sycamore Township, Hamilton County began

Sycamore Township organized in 1803 in what was then rural farm country north of Cincinnati, and its own township history credits Christian Waldsmith's paper mill as an early enterprise that supplied pioneers, newspapers, and land offices when goods from Redstone, Pennsylvania could not get through. Through the 19th and 20th centuries the township steadily lost ground to incorporating villages and cities carved from its territory -- Sharonville, Reading, Deer Park, Amberley Village, Blue Ash, Glendale, Montgomery, and Evendale all split off -- leaving the remaining township fragmented into disconnected pieces, or "islands," by the 1960s. Postwar development built the Kenwood and Dillonvale subdivisions, and by the 1980s Kenwood had grown into one of the region's major shopping and office districts around Kenwood Towne Centre. Population, which peaked near 54,943 in 1960 before the annexations, stood at 19,563 in 2020 across a remaining 6.7 square miles.

Incorporated 1803 (township organized by order of the Court of Common Pleas), by Court of Common Pleas, Hamilton County.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted explains the specific origin of the name "Sycamore" for this township; it likely refers to the sycamore trees common along the streams of the Mill Creek and Little Miami valleys the township straddles.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, or documented encounter specific to Sycamore Township itself was found in the sources consulted.

Stories

The township that gave itself away

Sycamore Township is old by Ohio standards -- organized in 1803, the same decade Ohio became a state -- but almost everything a visitor associates with the area today belongs to places that used to be part of it and are not anymore. Sharonville, Reading, Deer Park, Amberley Village, Blue Ash, Glendale, Montgomery, and Evendale all incorporated out of Sycamore Township's original territory over the following century and a half, each taking its own slice of land and tax base with it. The process accelerated sharply after World War II: the township's population hit 54,943 by 1960, its all-time peak, then fell 43.4 percent in the following decade alone as neighboring cities annexed piece after piece, leaving what remained split into disconnected fragments -- islands of unincorporated land bordered on every side by municipalities that had once been part of the same township government. What survived and grew inside those remaining pieces was the postwar Kenwood subdivision, which by the 1980s had become one of the region's biggest shopping and office destinations, built on farmland that a Sycamore Township family might have worked a century before.
