How Montgomery began

Montgomery is one of Hamilton County's oldest settlements, dating to 1795 and formally laid out in 1802 by Nathaniel Terwilliger; settlers arriving from Montgomery, New York in 1806-1807 renamed the growing crossroads for their old home. It grew as a stagecoach stop on the Cincinnati-Zanesville Road (later Montgomery Pike), and Abraham Yost's 1805 tavern there sold more than fifty barrels of whiskey in 1809 alone, a measure of the traffic passing through. The town incorporated as a village in 1910 but stayed tiny for another half-century -- just 378 residents in 1920 -- before booming into a Cincinnati bedroom community after the 1960s and reincorporating as a city in 1971; it held 10,853 residents in 2020. It carries five buildings and districts on the National Register of Historic Places, more than almost any other unit in this survey, a dense cluster of early Federal and Classical Revival-era structures around its historic crossroads core.

Settled 1795, platted 1802 (Nathaniel Terwilliger), incorporated village, 1910; city, 1971, by Nathaniel Terwilliger; renamed by settlers from Montgomery, New York, 1806-1807.

Where the name comes from

Montgomery was named by settlers who arrived from Montgomery, New York in 1806-1807, who gave the growing crossroads community the name of their former home.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, or documented encounter specific to Montgomery itself was found in the sources consulted.

Stories

Fifty barrels of whiskey in a year

Abraham Yost built his tavern in 1805, the same year Montgomery incorporated, on the well-traveled highway carrying goods and people toward Cincinnati -- a plain, two-story, gable-front building with a rear lean-to, weatherboarded over a stone foundation. Business found him fast: within four years, in 1809 alone, Yost's tavern sold more than fifty barrels of whiskey to travelers passing through, a startling volume that says as much about the road's traffic as it does about frontier drinking habits. The tavern outlived Yost by more than a century and a half as an ordinary private residence -- the Miller family alone held it from 1870 to 1968 -- until Montgomery's Kiwanis Club bought it, cleared out the old furnishings to the local historical society, and eventually handed the building to city government in 1979. Listed on the National Register in 1993, it now serves as an office headquarters, a quiet ending for a building that once measured its business in barrels.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Montgomery, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

47,807 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
