How Noble Township, Noble County began
Noble Township occupies the central-western part of Noble County and holds two of its notable villages: Belle Valley, incorporated in 1905 after the Cleveland and Marietta Railroad reached the area, and the unincorporated hamlet of Ava, near the Guernsey County line. Ava is remembered chiefly for the September 3, 1925 crash of the Navy airship USS Shenandoah, whose 400-foot stern section came down in the township's Section 5, one of two Noble County crash sites listed together on the National Register. The 2020 census counted 1,986 residents across the township's 30.4 square miles.
Incorporated 1819 (in Morgan County); part of Noble County from 1851.
Where the name comes from
Noble Township is older than its county: it was organized in Morgan County in 1819. Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio says the name honors James Noble, one of the first settlers near Sarahsville, and that it was later used for the whole county when Noble County was formed in 1851.
Before the town
The 1887 county history says an Indian trail ran along the West Fork of Duck Creek in Noble Township, evidently much traveled by Native hunters before white settlement. The valley was a favorite resort of elk, deer and buffalo, whose deeply worn paths remained long after settlers arrived, and for some years before the War of 1812 the Indians destroyed large game for the apparent purpose of thwarting white hunters. No Native village or mound in the township is documented.
Timeline

- — On April 3 forty-three votes are polled at the township election, Peter Fogle defeating William Ralph thirty-five to eight for justice of the peace.
- — The township tax list names ninety-six property holders, ninety-nine horses and 104 neat cattle.
- — Noble Township was organized in the new Morgan County; in 1851 it became one of the townships of the newly formed Noble County.
- — The county commissioners redraw the township on May 1 into thirty sections for the new Noble County.

- — On September 3, the Navy rigid airship USS Shenandoah broke apart in a line of severe squalls over Ava; its 400-foot stern section came to rest in Section 5 of Noble Township, near the modern Interstate 77 corridor, while the control car fell across the township line in Buffalo Township and the bow floated about six miles south before landing near Sharon; the crash killed 14 of the 43 crew including commander Zachary Lansdowne.
- — The federal government erected a bronze and stone monument at Ava to the Shenandoah crew.
- — The Shenandoah crash sites in Buffalo, Noble and Sharon Townships were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places on July 25.
- — The census counts 1,986 people in the township.
Stories
The morning the sky broke apart over Ava
Just before dawn on September 3, 1925, the Navy's rigid airship USS Shenandoah had left Lakehurst, New Jersey the afternoon before on a publicity tour of the Midwest when it ran into a line of violent squalls over Noble Township. Turbulence tore the 682-foot airship into three pieces. The control car, with commander Zachary Lansdowne and six other crewmen still aboard, fell to a farm that is now just across the township line in Buffalo Township, killing everyone in it. The 400-foot stern, with 18 men aboard, glided to earth soon after the breakup, landing in Section 5 of Noble Township near present-day Interstate 77. Fourteen of the forty-three men aboard died. Ava, a hamlet that would otherwise have stayed unremarked, has been telling the story ever since: a federal monument went up in 1937, and Noble County residents added two more markers on the fiftieth anniversary in 1975.
