How Olive Township, Noble County began
Olive Township traces its name back through three counties: it was set off from Olive Township, Morgan County when Noble County was organized in 1851, which itself had been carved from Olive Township, Guernsey County in 1819, which in turn came from part of Buffalo Township, Guernsey County in 1816. Most of Caldwell, the Noble County seat platted in 1854, sits in the township's north end, making Olive the county's economic and population center. The 2020 census counted 5,724 people across its 27.7 square miles, the great majority of the township's population living in or near Caldwell.
Settled 1814 (area, per Caldwell family accounts), incorporated 1851 (as part of Noble County; earlier as Olive Township, Guernsey County, 1816/1819), by Ohio General Assembly, on organization of Noble County.
Where the name comes from
Like most of Ohio's Olive Townships, the name was carried forward from its parent township rather than chosen fresh; the Noble County township took the name of the Olive Township in Morgan County from which it was detached in 1851, which itself continued the name of an earlier Olive Township in Guernsey County.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound, trail or treaty-cession record specific to Olive Township was found in the sources checked. The township lies in the West Fork Duck Creek valley within the Muskingum River watershed, land opened to American settlement ahead of the 1795 Treaty of Greenville line, which ran well north along the Tuscarawas branch of the Muskingum. The historic nations of the region — Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Mingo and Miami — hunted and traveled the wider Muskingum valley before removal.

- — Caldwell family accounts place settlers in the area that would become Olive Township and the town of Caldwell by this date, before formal platting.

- — Samuel and Sarah Brownrigg Caldwell built their house at what became East and Locust Streets in the future village of Caldwell, in the northern part of the township.

- — Caldwell was platted in December in the northern part of the township on land of Joseph and Samuel Caldwell, the site chosen for the Noble County seat; the town was founded in 1857.
- — Oil money brought a boom to the township's principal village, Caldwell, which by this date supported four newspapers, three churches, a bank and manufacturers including a woolen mill.

A township that changed counties twice without moving
Olive Township never packed up and relocated, but it belonged to three different counties in less than forty years. Land that was part of Buffalo Township, Guernsey County until 1816 became Olive Township, Guernsey County that year; three years later, when Morgan County organized, the same ground became Olive Township, Morgan County; and in 1851, when Noble County was carved from pieces of Guernsey, Monroe, Morgan and Washington, it became Olive Township, Noble County, the name it has held since. The pattern reflects how Ohio's rural southeast filled in: new counties were carved from older ones as settlement thickened, and township lines and names were carried forward largely intact even as the county line moved.
