How Belle Valley began
Belle Valley grew up on land owned by Benton Thorla, who opened the village's first store in 1872 and became the first postmaster that year, and the village took shape once the Cleveland and Marietta Railroad was extended to the site; it was incorporated in 1905. Coal mining drove rapid growth in the early 1900s, when the village grew to 1,050 residents by 1920, before a 1913 mine disaster and a long population decline that has left it at roughly 200 people today. In September 1925 the airship USS Shenandoah broke apart in a storm over Noble County, with one of its three wreckage sites landing in Noble Township near the village. Wolf Run State Park, whose 220-acre reservoir lies immediately north of the village along I-77, was built in the 1960s.
Settled 1872, incorporated 1905, by Benton Thorla (first store and post office, 1872); incorporation followed the Cleveland and Marietta Railroad's extension to the site.
Where the name comes from
No source consulted records why the village was named Belle Valley; none of the sources used (Wikipedia, the 2023 village revitalization plan) states the name's origin.
Before the town
No source we found names a Native village, camp, trail, or burial site specifically within Belle Valley or Noble Township. County Road 265 elsewhere in the region is reported to follow an old trail linking Wyandot villages at Upper Sandusky with Shawnee towns near Mac-o-chee, but that trail is well outside Noble County and is not evidence of a route through Belle Valley. See the county-level file for what is recorded about Native peoples in Noble County generally.

Stories
The Shenandoah comes down near Belle Valley
On its 57th flight, the Navy's rigid airship USS Shenandoah was caught over Noble County by a violent updraft that tore beyond the pressure limits of its gas bags before dawn on September 3, 1925. The ship broke into three pieces. The bow section became a free balloon that its commander, Charles Rosendahl, rode down safely with part of the crew still aboard. The control car fell away and its occupants, including Commander Zachary Lansdowne, were killed; other crew members fell through holes torn in the hull or went down with the engines. Fourteen of the forty-three men aboard died. Wreckage from the stern section came down in Noble Township, and a third section landed about six miles away in Sharon Township. For years afterward, farmers in the hills around Belle Valley turned up scraps of duralumin framing in their fields.
Coal and a company town's rise and fall
Belle Valley did not exist until the Cleveland and Marietta Railroad reached the spot; the 1887 county history says Benton Thorla opened the first store on his land in 1872 and became the first postmaster. Once the railroad made shipping coal out of the valley practical, mines opened in the hills around it and the village swelled: by the 1920 census it counted 1,050 residents. The boom had a dark underside. On May 18, 1913, an explosion in one of the local mines killed fifteen men. The coal economy that built the town did not last; by 1930 the population had fallen more than 40 percent from its peak, and the decline continued for most of the twentieth century, leaving Belle Valley at roughly 200 residents today.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
