How Center Township, Noble County began
Center Township sits at the middle of Noble County and takes in Sarahsville, the county's original seat of government from 1851 until the county offices moved to Caldwell in 1858; an 1884 fire destroyed nearly every business in the village. Township farmers grew tobacco from about 1835 onward, and Sarahsville was a tobacco-trading center into the late 1880s. The 1870 Young-Shaw House on State Route 146 east of Sarahsville, listed on the National Register in 1980, was demolished in 2016. The 2020 census counted 1,073 people across 28.3 square miles.
Incorporated 1851, by Ohio General Assembly, on organization of Noble County.
Where the name comes from
Named for its location at the geographic center of Noble County, a common naming pattern shared with eight other Center Townships across Ohio.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound, trail or treaty-cession record specific to Center Township was found in the sources checked. The township lies in the Duck Creek/Muskingum watershed in southeastern Ohio, land opened to American settlement ahead of the 1795 Treaty of Greenville line, which ran to the north. The historic nations of the region — Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Mingo and Miami — hunted and traveled the wider Muskingum valley before removal.
Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Miami.
Timeline

- — A post office called Sarahsville began operating in the village, which had already become a trading point for the township.
- — Noble County was organized, and Sarahsville, near the geographic center of the new county, was named its first county seat.
- — The county offices moved from Sarahsville to the new village of Caldwell in neighboring Olive Township.
- — The Young-Shaw House, a farmhouse on what is now State Route 146 east of Sarahsville, was built.
- — On August 20 a fire destroyed nearly every place of business in Sarahsville, the township's principal village, which never regained its earlier importance after losing the county seat.
- — L. H. Watkins published History of Noble County, Ohio, which documented Center Township and its tobacco trade among other township histories.
- — The Young-Shaw House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 8; it was demolished in 2016.
Stories
The county seat that lost its title
For its first years, Noble County's government sat not in Caldwell but in Sarahsville, chosen in 1851 for standing near the geographic middle of the new county. The arrangement did not last: Joseph and Samuel Caldwell offered land to the west for a new town on the condition it become the county seat, the site was chosen in 1854, and the county offices moved there in 1858. Sarahsville kept its post office, its tobacco trade, and its place as the fourth-largest village in the county, but never recovered its earlier standing, especially after an 1884 fire destroyed nearly every business in the town.
A tobacco township
Center Township farmers began growing tobacco around 1835, and the crop became the township's cash trade through the middle of the nineteenth century. Demand climbed during the Civil War years, and Sarahsville, the township's trading hub, stayed an active tobacco market into the late 1880s — long after the village had lost the county seat to Caldwell. The Young-Shaw House, a farmhouse built east of Sarahsville in 1870 and listed on the National Register in 1980, dated from roughly that era of the township's agricultural life; it was demolished in 2016.
