How Enoch Township, Noble County began

Enoch Township, in south-central Noble County, was organized in 1822 as a township of Monroe County and took its present boundary when Noble County was formed in 1851. The 1887 county history says it takes its name from the Enochs family, pioneers on the East Fork of Duck Creek, and Wikipedia names Elisha Enochs, an early settler and officeholder; it is the only Enoch Township in Ohio. Its defining chapter is German: a colony of German immigrants settled the township from about 1833 on, platted the village of Fulda in 1861 and named it for the city in Germany many of them had left, and built the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church there in 1874. A smaller village, Newburg, rose and declined within the township's history as well; today only a corner of Dexter City reaches into Enoch Township's southwest.

Platted Fulda platted 1861, incorporated organized as a Monroe County township in 1822; reorganized with new boundary when Noble County formed in 1851, by named for Elisha Enochs.

Where the name comes from

Stories

Fulda: a piece of Germany in Enoch Township

A large share of Enoch Township's early settlers came from Germany, drawn by land that the 1887 county history describes as full of never-failing springs and underlain by good coal, though little of it had yet been mined for more than local use. The Germans platted a village in 1861 and named it Fulda, after the city many of them had left behind. A post office opened there in 1875 and ran until 1904. In 1874 the community built Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a brick Romanesque Revival building that still stands and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980.
