How Jackson Township, Stark County began
Jackson Township, in the northwest of Stark County, began as part of Plain Township when the county was organized in 1809, passed to Green Township in April 1811, and was set off with Lawrence as Jackson Township in March 1815, named for Andrew Jackson. Its first township officers were elected at Jacob Click's house on the first Monday of April 1815. Perrin's 1881 county history found only crossroads settlements here: Millport, with the Stone Mill; Bridgeport, which grew up around a tavern when canal boats began to run about 1827; and McDonaldsville, platted in March 1829. The township later grew into one of the county's largest, taking in the village of Hills and Dales and parts of Massillon and North Canton, with 43,067 residents in 2020.
Settled c. 1810s (first settler not remembered, per Perrin), incorporated organized March 1815, by Plain Township pioneers; first officers elected at the house of Jacob Click.
Where the name comes from
Named for Andrew Jackson, then a major general who had recently won fame in the War of 1812, at the height of his popularity in 1815 -- fourteen years before he became the seventh president of the United States. It is one of 37 townships named Jackson across Ohio.

Timeline
- — When Stark County is organized, Plain Township is one of the first five created and includes the later Jackson Township; in April 1811 the area passes to Green Township.
- — Jackson Township is organized and named for General Andrew Jackson.

Stories
A mill-town name for a general, not yet a president
When Stark County organizers picked a name for the new township in 1815, Andrew Jackson had not yet been elected to anything higher than major general. His victory at the Battle of New Orleans that January made him a national hero just as Ohio's county governments were carving up their territory into townships, and 'Jackson' became one of the most popular township names in the state -- Ohio would eventually have 37 of them. Jackson Township itself stayed a modest milling community through the 19th century, with three gristmills and two sawmills recorded in an 1833 gazetteer, before 20th-century suburban growth around Massillon, Canton, and North Canton turned it into one of the county's more populous townships, home today to the small village of Hills and Dales and stretches of both larger cities.
Naming McDonaldsville
When John Clapper and Abraham Routan had their twenty-four lots surveyed in March 1829, the surveyor, Henry Beard, had been reading Revolutionary War history and was taken with Gen. Francis Marion's campaigns in the Carolinas. A tradition Perrin records says one of Marion's officers, a man named McDonald, was on a scout when he stopped at the home of a rich old Tory and demanded his horses; the Tory swore he had none, but McDonald found a famous racehorse called Salem in the barn, rode it off and gave it to his general. When the owners asked Beard what to call the village, he suggested McDonaldsville. The town grew a store in 1830 and, as Perrin puts it, a hard reputation: taverns on the village road sold whisky at every hour, and for years the place was known for the liquor sold there and for the hard cases who lived in it. Perrin adds that the inhabitants had improved by 1881.
