How Perry Township, Stark County began

Perry Township traces its first settlement to 1812, when Quakers Thomas and Charity Rotch founded Kendal on Sippo Creek, joined by settlers Arvine Wales and Charles Skinner who ran a woolen factory and sawmill on the same creek. Stark County commissioners formally named the township for War of 1812 naval hero Oliver Hazard Perry on December 7, 1813. Today an urban township bordering Massillon and Canton, Perry Township recorded 28,389 residents in the 2020 census and includes the Sippo Creek corridor where Johnny Appleseed reportedly planted one of his early Ohio orchards.

Where the name comes from

Named for Oliver Hazard Perry, the U.S. Navy commander who won the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813; Stark County commissioners formally applied the name on December 7, 1813, within months of Perry's victory.

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Perry Township is documented in the sources consulted. The township lies in the area of Stark County ceded by the Treaty of Greenville (1795).

Timeline

  1. — Thomas and Charity Rotch, Quakers from Massachusetts, found Kendal on Sippo Creek along with settlers Arvine Wales and Charles Skinner, who operate a woolen factory and sawmill.
  2. — The Religious Society of Friends is established in Kendal, and on December 7 Stark County Commissioners formally name the area Perry Township for Oliver Hazard Perry.
  3. — Dr. William Gardner arrives from New York, believed to be the township's first physician.
  4. — Perry Township begins operating public schools.
  5. — James Duncan founds Massillon, immediately west of Perry Township.
  6. — The township's economy includes three gristmills, seven sawmills, a fulling mill, two tanneries, and sixteen stores.
  7. — Perry High School opens, the township's first secondary school.

Stories

Johnny Appleseed's orchard on the Daum Farm

Among Perry Township's early-settlement stories is one tying it to Ohio's most enduring folk figure: Jonathan Chapman, known as Johnny Appleseed, is said to have planted an orchard on the Daum Farm along the Canton-Massillon Road, part of the network of nursery plots he seeded across the Ohio frontier ahead of settlement so that arriving farm families would find fruit trees already growing. The claim sits alongside better-documented Perry Township history -- the Quaker settlement of Kendal on Sippo Creek in 1812, and the township's formal naming for naval hero Oliver Hazard Perry the following year -- as part of a founding period when Quaker millers, a naval hero's name, and a wandering orchardist all left their mark on the same few square miles of Stark County within roughly a decade of each other.
