How Massillon began

Massillon grew from Thomas and Charity Rotch's 1812 Quaker settlement of Kendal on Sippo Creek into a town formally platted by James Duncan on December 6, 1826, and named for French bishop Jean-Baptiste Massillon at Duncan's wife's request. The Ohio and Erie Canal reached the town in 1828, making it 'the Port of Massillon' after the canal's completion in 1832, and the city incorporated in 1853 and 1868. Massillon's economy turned to heavy industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries -- Russell & Company steam traction engines, the 1909 Massillon Rolling Mill steel works -- and the city's water utility, founded as the Massillon Water Company in 1853, is now part of Aqua Ohio.

Settled 1812 (Kendal, the Quaker settlement that preceded Massillon), platted December 6, 1826, incorporated village 1853; city 1868, by James Duncan.

Where the name comes from

James Duncan named the town after Jean-Baptiste Massillon, a French Catholic bishop and noted preacher, at the request of his wife.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to the Massillon town site is documented in the sources consulted. The site lies within the area of Stark County ceded by the Treaty of Greenville (1795), along the Sippo Creek and Tuscarawas River corridor used by the Great Trail.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

Stories

Spring Hill: a Quaker house built to hide freedom seekers

Before there was a Massillon, there was Kendal, a Quaker settlement Thomas and Charity Rotch founded on Sippo Creek in 1812 after moving from New Bedford, Massachusetts, drawn by good grazing for Rotch's sheep. Between 1821 and 1824 the Rotches built Spring Hill, an 80-foot stone, brick, and oak house designed by architect Jehial Fox. The house is documented today on the National Park Service's Underground Railroad Network to Freedom: it was built with a secret staircase that let freedom seekers pass safely through, and local tradition holds that no one sheltered there between 1821 and 1865 was ever caught. Spring Hill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and today operates as a house museum, a direct link between Massillon's Quaker founders and the antislavery movement.

From canal port to steel city

Massillon's early prosperity came from the Ohio and Erie Canal, which reached the town in 1828 and, once complete in 1832, made it a major grain-shipping port known simply as 'the Port of Massillon.' That advantage faded as railroads took over freight in the mid-19th century, but Massillon reinvented itself as an industrial city: Russell & Company began building steam traction engines in 1884 and grew into one of the nation's largest agricultural-equipment makers, and in 1909 the Massillon Rolling Mill Company rolled its first sheet steel, launching decades of heavy manufacturing. That industrial identity brought labor conflict along with jobs -- the 1937 Little Steel Strike turned violent on July 11, killing three people and injuring hundreds -- a reminder that the same mills that built Massillon's 20th-century economy also made it a battleground over unionization.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Massillon, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,585 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
