How Canal Fulton began

Canal Fulton grew from two rival plats on the Tuscarawas River -- Milan, laid out March 23, 1814 by Matthew Rowland, and Fulton, platted May 16, 1826 beside the newly dug Ohio and Erie Canal -- which merged in 1853. Fulton renamed itself Canal Fulton in 1832, joining the canal's name to that of pioneer Ben Fulton, and the canal-boat era it commemorates survives today in the restored St. Helena II, a horse-drawn replica canal boat that still operates from the historic Lock 4 basin. The city's population reached 5,325 by recent count, and its water system has faced 21st-century upgrades including a new elevated tower completed in 2025.

Settled 1814 (Milan), platted May 16, 1826 (Fulton), incorporated Canal Fulton formed by 1853 merger of Milan and West Fulton into Fulton (renamed 1832), by Matthew Rowland (Milan); Ben Fulton and associates (Fulton).

Where the name comes from

Milan, the first of the three founding settlements, was named by Matthew Rowland after Milan, Italy, following the era's fashion for naming frontier towns after European cities. Fulton was renamed Canal Fulton in 1832, combining the name of the new Ohio Canal with that of local pioneer Ben Fulton.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to the Canal Fulton town site is documented in the sources consulted. The site sits on the Tuscarawas River, a corridor used by the Great Trail and the Cuyahoga-Muskingum Trail, and lies within the area ceded by a sequence of treaties -- Fort McIntosh (1785, covering land west of the Tuscarawas), Fort Industry (1805), and the 1817-1818 treaties of Maumee Rapids and St. Mary's that completed the cession of the rest of Ohio's Native land. The displaced nations named in Canal Fulton's own local history include the Wyandot, Lenape, Shawnee, Odawa, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Miami.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot, Shawnee, Odawa, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Miami.

Stories

Two rival plats on the Tuscarawas become one canal town

Canal Fulton began as a contest between two settlements platted a dozen years apart on opposite ideas about what would make a town grow. Matthew Rowland platted Milan in 1814, naming it for the Italian city in the fashion of the day, betting on simple river-valley settlement. A second group platted Fulton in 1826 directly beside the new Ohio and Erie Canal then under construction, betting on the canal instead -- and won: canal construction between 1826 and 1828 brought hundreds of workers and new commerce straight to Fulton's doorstep, and the settlement renamed itself Canal Fulton in 1832 to make the connection explicit. By 1853 the once-larger Milan, along with the smaller West Fulton, had been absorbed into the canal town outright. The horse-drawn canal boat St. Helena II, which still operates from the restored Lock 4 basin today, is Canal Fulton's living monument to the bet that paid off.

48,501 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address.
