How Canton began

Canton is the seat of Stark County and its largest city, platted by surveyor Bezaleel Wells on November 15, 1805 and incorporated as a city in 1838. It grew from a frontier crossroads into an industrial center built on watches, steel, and above all Henry Timken's tapered roller bearing, whose company relocated here from St. Louis in 1901. Canton is home to President William McKinley, who ran his 1896 'front porch campaign' from the city, and to professional football, whose governing association was founded here in 1920 and whose Hall of Fame opened in 1963. Its public water system, one of the first in the county, has drawn from Meyers Lake, Nimishillen Creek, and artesian wells since 1870.

Where the name comes from

The most commonly repeated account holds that Bezaleel Wells named the new town as a memorial to Captain John O'Donnell, an Irish-born merchant sea captain who traded with Guangzhou, China (then romanized 'Canton') and named his own Maryland estate after the city; a second, less-cited theory ties the name to the Huguenot use of 'canton' for a small administrative district.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to the city site is documented in the sources consulted; Canton lies near the path of the Treaty of Greenville boundary line, which ran through the Portage Lakes area between Akron and Canton in 1795, putting the site within the area ceded to the United States that year and opened to settlement within a decade. The Great Trail and Cuyahoga-Muskingum Trail routes crossed the area.

Stories

A bearing company moves in and becomes the city's name

Henry Timken did not invent his tapered roller bearing in Ohio; he patented it in 1898 while based in St. Louis and incorporated the Timken Roller Bearing Axle Company there in 1899. But as carriages gave way to automobiles, Timken looked for a plant site between Detroit's growing car factories and the steel mills of Pittsburgh and Cleveland, and in 1901 he chose Canton. The company grew alongside the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company, which had already brought 2,300 jobs to the city in 1888, and later Diebold and Republic Steel, giving Canton a manufacturing base broad enough to survive the watch industry's later decline. Timken remains headquartered in Canton today, a rare case of a company whose name became more associated with its adopted city than its city of birth.

Football's association is founded in a car showroom

On September 17, 1920, a group of team owners met in the Hupmobile showroom of Canton auto dealer Ralph Hay, inside the Independent Order of Odd Fellows building, and organized the American Professional Football Association -- the league that became the National Football League two years later. The Canton Bulldogs, built around Jim Thorpe, were the association's marquee franchise through the 1920s. Decades later, when the NFL looked for a permanent home for a hall of fame, it chose the town where the league itself had been born rather than a bigger media market; the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in Canton on September 7, 1963, and has anchored the city's tourism economy ever since.
