How Plain Township, Stark County began

Plain Township in north-central Stark County was one of the first five townships created when the county commissioners met on March 16, 1809; its first election was held at George Harter's house in April, and it then covered the later Lake, Lawrence and Jackson townships and two townships of Summit County. Henry Friday, a paroled Hessian from the battle of Trenton, squatted on Section 30 in 1805, followed that year by Hugh Cunningham and the Harter brothers; the first white child born in the township was Cunningham's daughter in 1806. Waterpower mills followed from 1810, and German settlers founded New Berlin (now North Canton) in 1831, where James Spangler invented the upright vacuum cleaner in 1908. The township grew from 2,540 residents in 1880 to a peak of 60,900 in 1960 and held 53,477 in 2020.

Settled 1805, incorporated March 16, 1809, by Henry Friday, Hugh Cunningham and George and John Harter, first settlers; created by the county commissioners.

Where the name comes from

Perrin's 1881 county history calls the reason for the name an unsolved question: some say part of the township was an open tract of land, or plain; others that some first settlers came from a township called Plain in the East and named the new one in remembrance of their old home.

Before the town

Perrin's 1881 county history says that before the War of 1812 bands of Indians wandered through the woods of the township, camping temporarily on the streams to hunt and trap, and that white hunters learned many of the arts of the chase from them. It names no village, mound or nation. The land was ceded by the Treaty of Greenville (1795).

Timeline

  1. — Henry Friday, a Hessian taken prisoner at Trenton and paroled, comes in a rickety cart to Section 30 and squats on it, the first white settler; Hugh Cunningham, an Irishman, locates on Section 34, and George and John Harter build their houses.
  2. — The area that becomes Lake Township is first surveyed within what is then Green Township, before later falling under Plain Township.
  3. — Cunningham's daughter is the first white child born in the township; Jacob Loutzenheiser arrives with pack horses, and Valentine Weaver, Peter Dickerhoof, Simon Essig, Henry Warner and the Eby brothers come the same year.
  4. — Plain Township is established as a civil township, originally encompassing a much larger area than today.
  5. — On March 16, at the commissioners' first meeting, Plain Township is created and an election called at George Harter's house for April; James Gaff and George Wyke are chosen justices of the peace and Abraham Van Meter clerk.
  6. — On March 5 the part of Plain west of the Tuscarawas River is made Tuscarawas Township; on December 3 the commissioners order a road north from Canton toward Ravenna viewed, to be forty feet wide and causewayed; A. Van Meter builds a log saw mill and chopping mill, swept away by a freshet within a year.
  7. — On April 8 the commissioners cut Green Township from Plain, which has kept its present boundaries since; G. A. Rex builds a grist mill on the Nimishillen with French burrs that cost $800 and a saw mill, and his flour is known for twenty or thirty miles.
  8. — Henry Everhard builds a grist mill and saw mill on the West Branch of the Nimishillen; mills by David Wise, Conrad Huffner and John Trump follow before 1814, and Adam Wise builds a mill on the Middle Branch about 1815 with a store and an early post office.
  9. — Lake Township separates from Plain Township to become its own independent township.
  10. — Perrin prints a list of about 140 resident landholders in 1828, among them the Bairs, Essigs, Ebys, Everhards, Willemans, Spanglers and Weavers, mostly Pennsylvania Germans.
  11. — German settlers found the Village of New Berlin on February 19, the first village platted in Plain Township.
  12. — John Pontius has the village of Middle Branch surveyed and platted on January 29, with sixty lots on Section 2, because the Connotton Valley Railroad has put a station there.
  13. — New Berlin department-store janitor James M. Spangler invents the upright vacuum cleaner; William Hoover buys the patent, founding the company that becomes the township's largest employer.
  14. — Plain Township's population peaks at 60,900 residents amid postwar suburban growth.

Stories

The township that lost Lake and gained a vacuum-cleaner town

Plain Township started out in 1809 covering ground that today belongs to several separate jurisdictions -- the area became so large that Lake Township, originally just a survey township inside Plain's boundary, split off on its own in 1816. What remained grew slowly through the 19th century as farmland, its population reaching only 2,540 by 1880. The real transformation began with New Berlin, platted in 1831 by German settlers and renamed North Canton during World War I, whose Hoover Company vacuum-cleaner plant turned the surrounding township into a magnet for mid-20th-century suburban growth: Plain Township's population multiplied more than twenty-fold between 1880 and its 1960 peak of 60,900, driven by families working at Hoover, Timken, and Canton's other industries.

Henry Friday's locust pie

The first white man to settle in Plain Township, Dr. Lewis Slusser wrote, was Henry Friday, a Hessian soldier taken prisoner at the battle of Trenton and paroled. In 1805, with a wife and three children, he drove a rickety cart drawn by an old horse to Section 30 and squatted. It was early summer, so he cleared a small patch for corn and potatoes and the family lived on wild meat and berries until the crop matured. His trade was digging wells, but until he found work he cut and cured grass on the wild meadows in the southwest of the township and sold it to emigrants. Slusser says he lived hard: in the year the locusts appeared he had a pie made of them and ate it, and in speaking of it he would say, in German, that it was the best pie one could make. After five or six years he moved to Jackson Township, where he died.

George Harter and the bear

In the autumn of 1805 George and John Harter built their houses in the township, leaving their families at Beaver until later. The next year George Harter brought two cows and a sow with eight pigs, and when the sow was given a bell and let loose to forage he soon heard her squeal. Snatching his always-loaded rifle and ramming down a second ball as he ran, he found a huge bear dragging the sow by the back of the neck through the bushes. The bear dropped her, stood on its hind legs and looked at him; Harter took aim at its chest and fired, and when it fell he reloaded and shot it through the head from a few rods off to be sure. Bears and wolves carried off all his pigs but two. He built a trap, in which several were caught and once, as Slusser's sketch has it, a large turkey buzzard.
