How North Canton began

North Canton began as the Village of New Berlin, founded February 19, 1831 by German settlers in Plain Township, and incorporated as a village in 1905. Anti-German sentiment during World War I led residents to rename it North Canton in January 1918. The town's defining industry arrived in 1873, when William H. 'Boss' Hoover moved his tannery business to the village center; after department-store janitor James M. Spangler invented the upright vacuum cleaner here in 1908 and Hoover bought the patent, the Hoover Company grew into the world's largest vacuum-cleaner maker by the 1930s before ending local production in 2007. North Canton incorporated as a city on January 1, 1962.

Where the name comes from

Founded as New Berlin by German settlers in 1831, honoring Berlin, Germany. During World War I, anti-German sentiment made that name unfashionable, and in January 1918 residents renamed the village North Canton, reflecting its location just north of the county seat.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to North Canton is documented in the sources consulted; the West Branch of Nimishillen Creek, whose name is a Lenape (Delaware) word meaning roughly 'waters of the black alder,' flows through the city. The site lies in the area of Stark County ceded by the Treaty of Greenville (1795).

Stories

A janitor's invention builds a company town

James M. Spangler was a department-store janitor in New Berlin with asthma aggravated by the dust his broom kicked up. In June 1908 he built himself an upright machine combining a rotating brush with a fan and a pillowcase for a dust bag, and patented the first practical upright vacuum cleaner. He didn't have the capital to manufacture it, so he sold the patent to William 'Boss' Hoover, a local leather-goods manufacturer whose tannery business had moved into New Berlin's center back in 1873. Hoover's company built the machine into a household name and, by the 1930s, the largest vacuum-cleaner maker in the world -- so thoroughly identified with the town that when anti-German sentiment during World War I forced New Berlin to drop its name in 1918, the replacement, North Canton, described only geography, leaving Hoover to define the town's identity instead. The company kept manufacturing there until 2007, when production finally moved overseas.
