How Green Township, Monroe County began
Green Township, organized July 9, 1824 and spanning about 27 square miles, was settled beginning around 1815 by Ephraim Jones, who built the first log cabin on Crane's Nest Fork northeast of what became New Castle. The Jones, Knight and Sprowls families were among the earliest to arrive, and the township's village, Newcastle, was incorporated around 1836 by Frederick and William Myers. Early religious and civic life followed a familiar Monroe County pattern: a horse-powered grist mill by 1823, a subscription school by 1825, and Methodist and Presbyterian churches organized within the township's first decade.

Where the name comes from

Before the town
No source consulted names a Native American village, camp or mound specific to Green Township. The area lay within the broader hunting and travel range of the Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and Mingo peoples before the Treaty of Greenville (1795), but no source found ties a named site to the township.

Stories
Building a township from Crane's Nest Fork
Green Township's settlement began with a single cabin: Ephraim Jones, arriving around 1815, built on Crane's Nest Fork northeast of the spot that would become New Castle, and was soon joined by his relatives Samuel and Abraham Jones and by the Knight family -- John, William and Stephen. Within a decade the scattered farms had enough people to organize formally, hold an election on Isaac Mitchell's land, and put up a horse-powered grist mill; within twenty years, Frederick and William Myers had incorporated Newcastle as the township's town. The pace -- cabin to mill to church to incorporated village within about twenty years -- was typical of Monroe County's interior townships, settled a full generation after the Ohio River townships along the county's eastern edge.
Barring out the teacher
Green Township's first subscription school opened in 1825, its costs met the old-fashioned way: families paid a dollar per child for a three-month term, and the teacher boarded in turn with each family for as many days as their subscription covered. Custom demanded something more of him besides lessons -- before the winter holidays he had to sign an agreement to treat his students to ginger cakes, cider and apples on Christmas or New Year's Day, or the older boys would 'bar him out' of the schoolhouse, or smoke him out through the chimney if he got there first and tried to hold the door. One teacher remembered from 1829-30 climbed onto the roof himself and covered the chimney to smoke the students out instead, then still refused to sign -- though he relented after a standoff and gave the children a half-holiday anyway, which they spent at the games common to the season.
