How Lee Township, Monroe County began
Lee Township, along the Ohio River in the county's south, was formally organized by the Ohio General Assembly on February 10, 1869, though settlement in its Sardis bottom went back to the first years of the 1800s, with the McBride family clearing land there by 1802. James Patton platted the village of Sardis in 1843, which by 1880 had grown to 265 residents on the strength of an increasingly German and Swiss farming population that made cheese a leading local industry. The township remains rural and sparsely populated, with the Ohio and Lee Township Water and Sewer Authority now serving the area jointly with neighboring Ohio Township.
Settled by 1802 (McBride family, Sardis bottom), incorporated 1869-02-10 (township organized), by Ohio General Assembly.

Timeline
- — Johnston and Scott, purchasers of the fractional township tract, lived on the Sardis bottom in very early days, probably as early as 1801; Stephen Scott, called Yankee Scott, farmed above them.
- — The McBride family had upwards of forty acres cleared in the Sardis bottom, with bearing fruit trees and buildings, among the township's earliest documented improvements.
- — Johnston and Scott, early purchasers of a fractional township tract, established a store in the area.
- — Major Earl Sproat's 690 acres, held by the Ohio Company member until his death about 1823, were sold to James Patton.
- — James Patton laid out the town of Sardis along the Ohio River, in section 33.
- — The first post office opened at Sardis, the river port that came to have factories, mills and hotels.
- — The Ohio General Assembly organized Lee Township from parts of Green, Ohio and Jackson townships.
- — Sardis had grown to a population of 265, with its own post office, while township population stood at 1,241.
- — Lee Township made 104,263 pounds of cheese; its Mount Moriah Methodist, United Brethren and Mennonite churches stood in section 11 and the schools enrolled 291 pupils in five buildings.
- — The census counted 883 residents in the 17.7-square-mile township.
Stories
Sardis and the cheese farms
The Sardis bottom on the Ohio River was settled among the first in the county: a Mr. McBride had forty acres cleared there by 1802 with bearing fruit trees and good buildings, and Johnston and Scott, buyers of all of the fractional township, opened a store about 1808 or 1809. Major Earl Sproat of the Ohio Company held 690 acres until his death about 1823, and James Patton, who bought them in 1825, laid out Sardis in 1843 and saw the post office open the next year. The village, 265 people by 1880, became a river port of factories, mills and hotels, until better roads cut into its river business. Around it the population became German and Swiss, and the farms made 104,263 pounds of cheese in the last year reported. Lee was the only township in Monroe County created by act of the Legislature, on February 10, 1869, out of parts of Ohio, Green and Jackson townships.
