How Ohio Township, Monroe County began
Ohio Township, organized October 18, 1818 along the Ohio River in the county's southeast, was settled remarkably early: Robert McEldowney brought his family, including four-year-old son Samuel, to the area around 1798, more than a decade before the county itself existed. The township's main community today is Hannibal, originally platted as 'Baresville' after founder Jacob Bare and later renamed for its post office; a second large employer arrived in the twentieth century with the Ormet Corporation's aluminum operations nearby. Nineteenth-century Ohio Township led the county in cheese production, and the township's water and sewer service, jointly run with neighboring Lee Township, has been under a state cleanup agreement since 2011 for decades of inadequate sewage treatment.

Where the name comes from
The township takes its name from the Ohio River, which forms its eastern boundary.
Before the town
The Ohio Township local history records two puzzling finds sometimes read as evidence of earlier Native or even pre-contact activity: a flat rock bearing impressions of human and animal tracks -- feet, deer, bear, turkey, bird and squirrel prints -- and a brass crucifix found on the Virginia (West Virginia) riverbank opposite the township near a collapsed mound. Neither find was scientifically excavated or dated by any source consulted, and the crucifix, if genuine, more likely reflects later European or mission contact than a prehistoric Native artifact; both are recorded here as curiosities from the 1880s local history rather than confirmed archaeological evidence. No named historic-era village or camp inside the township was found in the sources checked.

Stories
From Baresville to Hannibal
The village at the heart of Ohio Township started life with a much more literal name. Jacob Bare was an early settler of the Ohio River bottom in the township's north, and the small community that grew up around his land was platted and known for years simply as Baresville, after its founder. The name changed only when a post office was established under the name Hannibal, and over time Baresville the settlement became Hannibal the village on the map -- an ordinary piece of nineteenth-century Ohio post-office naming, but one that erased a founder's name from the community he had started. Samuel McBride had settled the same bottom in 1802, among the community's first residents, and salt-packer Jacob Ollom worked out of the area too, driving pack trains of salt some 200 miles across the Allegheny Mountains to Williamsport on the Potomac and back, selling it locally for three to four dollars a bushel in the years before roads or rail reached this stretch of the Ohio River.
Anna Howell, dead at 106
Much of what the township's nineteenth-century historians could record about its first settlers came from a single long-lived source: Anna Howell, described as herself one of the first settlers in the county, who died at the advanced age of 106 years some years before the 1880s history that quotes her was compiled. Her memory supplied details -- names, approximate dates, the order in which families arrived -- that would otherwise have been lost, since Ohio Township's earliest settlement, beginning around 1798, predated the county's own organization by fifteen years and left few written records of its own.
