How Malaga Township, Monroe County began

Malaga Township, organized December 15, 1820, was settled beginning around 1815 by pioneers including John Hendershot, believed to have built the township's first cabin. It sits on a high, coal- and limestone-bearing ridge in the northern part of Monroe County, and its main village, Miltonsburg, was laid out in 1836 by David Pierson of Woodsfield and named for Pierson's son Milton -- the same Pierson family that named Clarington, on the Ohio River, for a daughter. Early religious life was unusually varied for a small township, with Quaker, Baptist, Presbyterian and nondenominational meeting houses all organized within its first two decades.

Settled c. 1815 (John Hendershot), incorporated 1820-12-15 (township organized).

Stories

John Hendershot's ridge

Malaga Township sits on the high, broad ridge that runs north from Summit Township into Belmont County. Its first settlements were made about 1815 by John Hendershot, who is believed to have built the first cabin, with Stillwell Truex, Matthew Rogers, Martin Fogle, Frederick Hays, William Kennard, Peter Mann, David Lupton, David Mann and James Graham. When the township was organized on December 15, 1820, twenty-two men voted at Peter Mann's house. Abner Carleton built the first water grist mill on Baker's Fork, Abraham Landis, who lived almost to a hundred, the first sawmill about 1817, and David H. Craig taught twenty-two scholars on the Manns' farm in 1818. The first meeting house, about 1819, was open to all denominations; a Bush Meeting House and a Quaker meeting house soon followed.
