How Center Township, Monroe County began
Center Township, formed around the county seat of Woodsfield, was among the earliest-settled parts of Monroe County, with pioneer cabins going up along Sunfish Creek between 1805 and 1812. It takes its name from its position at the geographic middle of the county, chosen as the site for the courthouse when Monroe County organized in 1815. Early industry ran on water power -- grist and saw mills built by the Winland and Jackson families -- and the township's history is bound up with Woodsfield's own, including the 1867 courthouse fire that destroyed the county's early probate records.

Where the name comes from
Center Township took its name from its central position within Monroe County, which made it the natural site for the county seat.
Before the town
No source consulted names a Native American village, camp or mound specific to Center Township. The general record for eastern Ohio's Sunfish Creek and Ohio River hill country -- Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and Mingo use of the area as hunting and travel ground before the Treaty of Greenville (1795) -- applies broadly but is not tied to any named site within the township by the sources checked.

- — Sara, sister of settler Levin Okey, died and received what local history records as the first burial in the future village of Woodsfield.

- — Levin Okey, an early Center Township settler and county commissioner, died; over 200 people attended his funeral.
- — A brick building for the county Infirmary Farm was completed.
- — Fire destroyed the county courthouse in Woodsfield along with the Probate Court's records.
Stories
Mills on Sunfish Creek and Crane's Nest
Center Township's earliest economy ran on water power drawn from Sunfish Creek and its tributary Crane's Nest Creek. Jacob Winland built grist mills in the township's first years of settlement, and his relative John Winland put up the first sawmill on Sunfish Creek, cutting the lumber that framed the township's earliest cabins and, later, its first frame buildings around Woodsfield. Jesse Jackson operated another mill on Crane's Nest Creek before 1820. These small mills, built within a few years of the first cabins going up between 1805 and 1812, were the difference between a scattering of squatters' clearings and a settled farming township able to support a county seat.
First child, September 25, 1816
Local historians researching Center Township in the nineteenth century concluded that the first child born there was probably Sarah Jefferies, born September 25, 1816, to the Jeffries family who had arrived among the township's original settlers alongside John Winland, Levin Okey, Peter Palmer and the Jackson family. The claim is given only as 'probable' even in the nineteenth-century sources, a reminder of how thin and scattered the written record of the township's first decade remained even a generation or two later, when the county's early historians went looking for firsts.
