How Salem Township, Monroe County began

Salem Township, organized July 19, 1815 -- one of Monroe County's first four townships -- grew up along Sunfish Creek, the largest creek in the county, which drew settlers as early as 1798-1799. An 1831 account recorded by Dr. N. E. Henthorn names Sunfish Creek's Native name as 'Buckchitawa' and Opossum Creek's as 'Eagle Creek,' along with a story of a fatal 1788 ambush attempt near Sunfish Creek. Most settlers here were squatters on Congressional land, and the township's culture discouraged outsiders from 'entering out' land already claimed by a settler unable yet to buy it.

Settled 1798-1799 (James Henthorn, mouth of Sunfish Creek), incorporated 1815-07-19 (township organized).

Where the name comes from

The origin of the township name Salem is not recorded.

Before the town

The township's history preserves the Native names for its two creeks, Buckchitawa for Sunfish Creek and Eagle Creek for Opossum Creek, given in 1831 to Dr. N. E. Henthorn at a tavern in Reading by an aged Indian who had lived with the Jackson family since the War of 1812 and who said he had been wounded and spared by Jackson's father at the time Boggs was killed on Boggs Island. The old man told how, about 1788, when Marietta was settling, Indians forced a white prisoner to decoy a passing boat to the shore at Buckchitawa; a big Indian who looked out from behind a tree was killed by the steersman's bullet, the Indians cried Wetzel, Wetzel and fled, and returned next day to bury him. He also said there was lead on Opossum, Sunfish and Captina creeks but the veins were thin. The 1882 history adds that a skeleton eight feet five inches long found at Clarington was probably the big Indian, and that a stone image of a lion-like beast with a human face found about 1860 where the bank caved in; the nation of the men is not stated.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Timeline

  1. — A Native man attempting an ambush near the mouth of Sunfish Creek was killed, per an 1831 account by Dr. N. E. Henthorn.
  2. — James Henthorn arrived at the mouth of Sunfish Creek, later settling near present-day Clarington.
  3. — William Henthorn and John Hilmore tried to capture a bear swimming in Sunfish Creek; the bear boarded their boat and they fled, and other men later shot it from a raft.
  4. — Cornelius Vandevanter settled below the mouth of Opossum Creek, among the earliest documented settlers in the township; the county history dates his settlement only as prior to 1802.
  5. — Alexander Newlen cleared ten acres on what became the Joel Yost farm; most early settlers were squatters who entered their land when they could, and entering out a squatter was thought a very mean trick.
  6. — Jonathan Rutter and John Vandevanter built the first mill in the township on Sunfish Creek in 1805 or 1806, with millstones of blue rock from the cliffs, and Mitchell Atkinson taught the first school in a cabin on his brother Charles's farm in 1804 or 1805.
  7. — Salem Township was formally organized as one of Monroe County's first four townships.
  8. — The Baptists built the first church in the township a mile from the mouth of Opossum Creek; Rev. Joseph Junior Smith served it for many years.
  9. — David Pierson settled the Henthorn farm at the mouth of Sunfish Creek and named the village of Clarington for his daughter Clarinda; the post office opened in 1824 as Sunfish.
  10. — Dr. N. E. Henthorn recorded, from an elderly Native man he met near Cincinnati, the story of a white decoy prisoner and the killing of a very tall Native man ('the big Indian') near Buckchitawa (Sunfish Creek), a story later related by Henthorn to John B. Noll and published by Henry Howe in 1891.
  11. — The Christians built a church at Clarington and the Methodists, who had preached in the township since 1802, built theirs in 1842.
  12. — About this date an image in hard gray stone, a lion-like animal with a human head and face, eight inches high on an eight-by-ten pedestal, was found where the river bank had caved in at Clarington; a skeleton unearthed there earlier, measured at eight feet five inches, was thought to be the big Indian.
  13. — Salem Township had 2,377 residents, 915 of them in Clarington; the township made 88,910 pounds of cheese in 1881.
  14. — The census counted 831 residents in the 26.4-square-mile township, 280 of them in Clarington.

Stories

The bear that came aboard

In 1801, William Henthorn and John Hilmore spotted a bear swimming across Sunfish Creek and set out in a boat to capture it, a common enough sport among the township's early hunters. The plan went wrong when the bear, rather than being subdued, climbed into the boat with them; the two men abandoned ship rather than fight a bear at close quarters on the water. Other men from the settlement, alerted to the chase, finished the job from a raft, shooting the animal before it could reach shore -- a small, almost comic episode that nonetheless captures how close early Salem Township settlers lived to the wild creek bottoms they were clearing.

The big Indian

In 1831, Dr. N. E. Henthorn was traveling home to Monroe County from Cincinnati when he stopped overnight at a tavern near Reading, Ohio, and was asked to sit with the innkeeper's father and an elderly Native man who had lived with the family since the War of 1812. The old man told Henthorn that Sunfish Creek's Native name was Buckchitawa and Opossum Creek's was Eagle Creek, then told a story from the settlement era: Native raiders once forced a white prisoner to stand on the riverbank near Buckchitawa and call a passing boatload of settlers ashore, promising he had escaped captivity. As the boat neared, an unusually tall man among the raiders -- 'the big Indian' -- raised his head from behind a tree to watch, and the boat's steersman shot him dead; the rest of the party fled, crying the name 'Wetzel.' Years afterward, a Clarington man digging a cellar for a neighbor's house turned up a skeleton that a local doctor, measuring the bones, judged to have belonged to a man about eight feet five inches tall -- taken locally, though never proven, to be the remains of the big Indian himself.
