How Goshen Township, Belmont County began

Goshen Township was probably organized around 1809-10, its name most likely chosen at the suggestion of settler Jesse White and others who had emigrated from an earlier Goshen Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania; the township's own early records do not survive, having been sold to a Wheeling paper maker as scrap. John Adams, believed to be the first settler, arrived about 1797-1800 and squatted on Congress land for five years before any other settler came, reportedly living eight years before he ever saw an apple. The Wetzel boys, Lewis and Jacob, are believed by local tradition to have been held overnight by their Native captors on a farm in the township before making their escape, and the Hurdle Methodist meeting house, built about 1809-10, is locally considered the township's first church organization. By 1833 the township supported several gristmills and sawmills along with three or four fulling mills and carding machines. Two villages, Belmont in the township's north and Bethesda in its center, sit within Goshen Township's boundaries; each is documented under its own entry in this atlas.

Settled about 1797-1800 (John Adams), incorporated about 1809-10, by settlers from Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ireland.

Where the name comes from

Probably named for Goshen Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, from which many early settlers had come; the 1880 history credits the suggestion to Jesse White and a few others, and the 1903 history repeats the Chester County origin.

Before the town

The 1880 county history places the likely overnight encampment of two young Wetzel-family captives, Lewis and Jacob, on the farm later owned by Hendly Gregg, near the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad about midway between Burr's Mills and Burton's Station, from which the boys are said to have made their escape from their Native captors; the source calls this identification probable rather than certain, based on a review of earlier historians' accounts and personal examination of the ground. No other named Native village, camp, or trail specific to Goshen Township was found.

Timeline

  1. — John Adams, believed to be the township's first settler, squats on Congress land on section 1, on the Bend fork of Captina Creek, five years before any other settler arrives; he reportedly lives eight years before seeing an apple, subsisting on cornmeal and pounded hominy.
  2. — William Philpot, Ralph Heath, and Joseph Wright jointly enter section 12 at Steubenville on September 4, per the diary of the late Nehemiah Wright, one of the most authentic surviving accounts of the township's earliest settlement; John Gregg arrives in November the same year.
  3. — Joseph Wright plants the township's first orchard on April 20, fifty trees of natural fruit, and clears seven acres for corn planted May 17, 1803; a three-foot snow falls January 21, 1804. Darling Conrow enters a section of land about this time at what becomes known as Burr's Mills.
  4. — David Fawcett and Ezekiel Smith settle in the township; Joseph Danner, Nathaniel McNichols and others follow about 1806-07.
  5. — Joseph Wright begins a school in May in a cabin at what becomes Belmont village, the first schoolhouse in the township.
  6. — The Friends (Quakers) church at Belmont village, probably the township's first church organization, executes its deed for a meeting-house lot and graveyard on March 16.
  7. — Belmont, first called Wrightstown, is laid out by the Irish settler Joseph Wright, who is also its first schoolteacher and first postmaster.
  8. — The Hurdle Methodist meeting house, a hewed-log building on the land of John Hurdle, is built and organized, locally considered by some to be the township's earliest church of any kind; Rev. James B. Findly preaches the dedication sermon.
  9. — The Friends (Quaker) meeting at Belmont, which had built a brick meeting house about 1808-09, is rent by the Hicksite schism, set off by the preaching of Elias Hicks, about 1828-29.
  10. — The last deer killed in the township is taken at a circular fox hunt whose drive encompassed the whole township; the last bear is killed by Samuel Russell. The same year, the old Hurdle meeting house is replaced by a new brick building at what becomes Burton's Station.
  11. — A hewed-log meeting house is built for the Ebenezer church, formed in Goshen Township by Baptists who had belonged to the old Stillwater Baptist church (which split about 1830 over Alexander Campbell's preaching).
  12. — The township is recorded as containing several gristmills and sawmills, plus three or four fulling mills and carding machines.
  13. — When the railroad (the Central Ohio line, later the Baltimore and Ohio) is located through the township, Merrick S. Burr puts up a sawmill and the company names its station Burr's Mills for him.
  14. — William Patterson moves his store and the Bethesda post office from near Bethesda church to the new railroad village (Fairmount, station Burr's Mills), which keeps the post-office name Bethesda.
  15. — McNichols, Frost and Martin build a steam flouring mill at the railroad village, and Merrick Burr lays out the village as Fairmount, named for its high, attractive site.
  16. — The Barnesville District Camp Meeting Association meets at the Shirer Methodist chapel and buys an 18-acre grove beside Bethesda for $1,410.58; cottages follow and camp meetings run annually until 1890.
  17. — The first Epworth Park Assembly, a Chautauqua-style program arranged by a committee of Methodist ministers, is held at Bethesda; the twelfth was held in 1902.
  18. — Belmont village is incorporated, with W. H. White as mayor; its population is 350 in 1880 (Wikipedia gives 319) and 422 in 1900.
  19. — A new First National Bank of Belmont is organized with $25,000 capital after the first one fails earlier that year, a blow to the town and the surrounding country.

Stories

A tree that remembered 1782

Some years before 1880, John E. Hunt was cutting down a large poplar tree in Goshen Township when he found chips taken out near its heart with an axe, one toward each of the cardinal points of the compass. O. A. Dowdell, near whose residence the tree grew, counted the tree's growth rings from the point where it had been 'boxed' in this way, and the count ran back to 1782, the year of Crawford's expedition against the Sandusky Indians, a disastrous campaign in which Colonel William Crawford was captured and killed. The marked tree stood as a living, dateable trace of that distant and violent year, discovered entirely by accident a century later by a farmer felling timber on his own land.

One village, three names

When the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was located through Goshen Township in 1852, Merrick S. Burr put up a sawmill beside the line and the company named its station Burr's Mills for him. Two years later a village was laid out nearby, and its proper name was Fairmount. Meanwhile William Patterson, who ran a store and the post office two miles south near Bethesda church, moved both to the new village in 1854. By common consent the post office kept its old name, Bethesda. The 1880 county history sums up the result: the village's proper name was Fairmount, the railroad station was Burr's Mills and the post office was Bethesda, though most people simply said Burr's Mills. In 1855 McNichols, Frost and Martin built a steam flour mill there, and the Methodists set aside an 18-acre grove at the north edge of the village as a camp-meeting ground.
