How Somerset Township, Belmont County began

Somerset Township was taken from Wayne Township and organized March 16, 1819, occupying Belmont County's extreme southwestern corner against Monroe, Noble, and Guernsey counties. Its first permanent settlers, among them Enoch Stanton, Borden Stanton (Roden in the 1903 county history), and Joseph Bishop, arrived sometime between 1809 and 1814; Enoch Stanton, a member of the Society of Friends, helped organize the township's first church, held near the site of Somerton, which Borden Stanton laid out about 1818. The county history also documents the villages of Boston, laid out in 1834 on land bought by a settler named Hazel, and Temperanceville, laid out by Robert Gallagher, a self-declared 'temperance man' who chose the name to promote his principles and who built a grist mill there around 1807. The township is the only Somerset Township in Ohio.

Settled between 1809 and 1814 (Enoch Stanton, Borden Stanton, and others), incorporated March 16, 1819, by Belmont County commissioners, taken from Wayne Township.

Where the name comes from

The township's name, like that of its community Somerton, most likely traces to Somerset, England, the documented source of the Somerton place name; no source consulted states this connection for the township explicitly.

Before the town

No Native village, camp, or trail specific to Somerset Township was found in the sources consulted.

Timeline

  1. — Among the first permanent settlers in Somerset Township are Enoch Stanton, Borden Stanton, James Egerton, Joseph Bishop, Homer Gibbons, Samuel Williams, and Richard Egerton; a few squatters had already built cabins along the creeks without entering land.
  2. — Somerton, the township's principal village, is laid out by Borden Stanton; Richard Andrews serves as its first postmaster, with mail carried from St. Clairsville to Woodsfield once a week.
  3. — The Friends hold the first religious service in the township; at the first monthly meeting in April Isaac Stahl is appointed overseer and John Middleton is approved as minister.
  4. — Somerset Township is organized March 16, taken from Wayne Township, occupying Belmont County's extreme southwestern corner (town 7, range 6).
  5. — The township's first grist mill is built at Somerton by Jonathan Bogue (Pogue in one county history), run by water power; the first school house is also built at Somerton this year, of the era's typical clapboard-roof, puncheon-floor construction.
  6. — Catholic settler Edward Gallagher, who had settled in neighboring Beaver Township, Guernsey County, in 1818, helps organize St. Dominic's Church, at first only four families, building a log church that serves the Temperanceville-area congregation; a larger brick church replaces it in 1854.
  7. — A post office called Somerton begins operating.
  8. — Boston, a village on Somerset Township's western border, is laid out by a settler named Hazel on land he had purchased.
  9. — Temperanceville is laid out on the western border by Robert Gallagher, a strict temperance man and a Catholic.
  10. — Jacob Yocum and Joseph Miller, who had purchased the original Somerton grist mill property in 1837, build a new mill and switch from water power to steam.
  11. — Somerset Lodge No. 354, Free and Accepted Masons, is chartered in Somerton, with Emor Danford as first master; fire destroys the lodge building and its records on November 20, 1899, and a new building is occupied August 16, 1900.
  12. — The Presbyterian Church of Somerton is organized with eleven members; its church is dedicated on November 20, 1870 by the Rev. Cross of Wheeling.
  13. — The Somerton Methodist congregation, organized in 1831 in John Koontz's house with a brick church in 1834, builds a new brick church.
  14. — The Belmont Bank of Somerton organizes in January with a capital stock of $50,000, its directors including R. C. Miles, Solomon Hogue, and A. Andrews.
  15. — Civil War veterans form Taylor Post, G.A.R., in Somerton; it has 21 members left by 1902.
  16. — Two burglars from Zanesville, Stevens and Divine, bind Mrs. James Warrick and her companion at their house a mile from Somerton and kill her 16-year-old grandson Clarence; they are convicted and sentenced to life, win a writ of error, and escape from the Belmont County jail before a retrial.
  17. — The township has 1,862 people, down from 2,045 in 1890; tobacco, grown at 1,000 pounds per acre and about 700,000 pounds in all twenty years earlier, is again the leading cash crop.

Stories

A town named for temperance

Robert Gallagher, who laid out Temperanceville on Somerset Township's western border along the headwaters of Beaver Creek, was by the 1880 county history's account a committed 'temperance man' who thought he could promote his principles simply by the name he gave his new town. Around 1807 he built a grist mill there with two run of buhrs. The village he founded went on to anchor the local Catholic community that formed around Edward Gallagher's family after 1818, its members drawn from families with surnames like Jeffries, DeLong, and McConagly, worshiping first in a log building called St. Dominic's Church and later in the brick church built in 1854, which by 1880 numbered about two hundred communicants under Father Heery.

A bank robbery planned, and a murder instead

In 1900 two professional burglars named Stevens and Divine, said to be from Zanesville, took rooms in quiet Somerton. Testimony at their trial later suggested they meant to blow open the Belmont Bank, but they could not get nitroglycerine from Bellaire and changed their plans. The day before, the father of sixteen-year-old Clarence Warrick, who managed the finances of his widowed mother, Mrs. James Warrick, had drawn $300 from a Barnesville bank for her year's living, and the robbers evidently learned of it. They went to her house, about a mile from the village, and tied hand and foot the old lady and Miss Markey, a maiden lady who lived there. When Clarence woke, he was murdered. The county was so enraged that, by the 1903 historian's account, the murderers would have been dealt with on the spot had they been caught. They were arrested, convicted and sentenced to life in the penitentiary, but won a writ of error, were returned to the Belmont County jail to await a new trial, and escaped before it could be held; the 1903 book says they had not been heard of since.
