How Union Township, Belmont County began

Union Township was established on August 15, 1804, when Belmont County's commissioners divided Kirkwood township at the request of its inhabitants, with the first election held at Duncan Morrison's house; the name recorded in the commissioners' order gives no explanation for the choice of 'Union.' Jonathan Ellis and Duncan Morrison settled here in 1801, among the township's earliest arrivals, and by 1809 the township had hosted, by local tradition, only the second Methodist camp meeting ever held in Belmont County. By 1833 it supported several flouring mills, sawmills, fulling mills, and carding machines. The village of Morristown, whose well-preserved National Road-era streetscape is documented under its own entry, sits within the township's center; the unincorporated community of Lafferty, in the township's northeast, is named for a Dr. Joseph Lafferty.

Settled 1801 (Jonathan Ellis, Duncan Morrison), incorporated August 15, 1804, by Belmont County commissioners, dividing Kirkwood township.

Where the name comes from

No source states why the township was called Union. The commissioners' order of August 15, 1804 set it off from Kirkwood Township, with its first election at Duncan Morrison's house; Morristown, the township's principal village, is named for Morrison.

Before the town

No Native village, camp, or trail specific to Union Township was found in the sources consulted. The 1880 county history notes only that 'prior to Wayne's great victory the Indian ruled chief monarch' over this ground before area settlement began after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Timeline

  1. — Jonathan Ellis settles on section 3 and builds a grist mill on a branch of Wheeling Creek, probably the township's first; Duncan Morrison also locates in the township this year.
  2. — John Zane and William Chapline of Wheeling survey and lay out Morristown into lots; it takes its name from Duncan Morrison, one of the first settlers and an early justice of the peace, who took out a tavern license near the site in 1803.
  3. — The Belmont County commissioners, on August 15, order Kirkwood township divided and a new township formed, 'to be known by the name of Union township,' with its first election to be held at Duncan Morrison's house.
  4. — The Plainfield congregation of Friends (Quakers), the township's first church organization, erects a hewed-log meeting house on section 3; the building is replaced by a larger frame edifice in 1835.
  5. — The traveler Fortescue Cuming, passing through Morristown on a militia-muster day, finds fifty drunken horsemen with rifles on the road and the town in uproar; Squire Duncan Morrison, a justice of the peace and militia major, shuts his house and takes blows trying to keep the peace at a fray.
  6. — What is locally claimed to be only the second camp meeting ever held in Belmont County takes place in Union Township, conducted by Methodist Episcopal preachers and drawing large crowds from neighboring counties.
  7. — Dr. Alexander Gaston begins practicing medicine in Morristown.
  8. — Township men, including Joseph Wiley, John Ault, Jacob Auldfather, James Clark, John Gaston, Wm. Boyd, Abe Riddle, Thomas Riddle, and Nicholas Conway, serve in the War of 1812.
  9. — The Methodist preacher Lorenzo Dow, remembered as an eccentric, rides through Morristown preaching and stops opposite Squire Morrison's hotel to exhort the crowd.
  10. — Capt. Robert Morrison's company, recruited mainly in Union Township, is the first company organized in Belmont County for the War of 1812; it musters in September and camps at the old Indian Springs east of St. Clairsville.
  11. — A grist mill is built north of town by McWilliams; still in operation in 1879 under a Mr. Kennon.
  12. — Twelve sections are detached from Union's northwestern portion to help form Flushing township, and six sections from its northeast are given to Wheeling township, fixing Union's present boundary.
  13. — Two men, Arnold and Williams, rob the U.S. mail carrier on Boden hill near Morristown; both are caught, and Arnold is convicted and sent to the penitentiary.
  14. — The Presbyterian Church of Morristown is organized at the home of Dr. Alexander Gaston, its first regular pastor being the Rev. William McMillan; a brick church replaces the log schoolhouse in 1828 and the present brick church is built in 1848 for $1,400.
  15. — The township is recorded as containing several flouring mills, sawmills, fulling mills, and carding machines.
  16. — Morristown is incorporated and holds its first village election.
  17. — A joint-stock company builds a flouring mill at Morristown, which begins grinding in spring 1857 and passes to Fisher & Lippencott and in 1866 to Israel Murdaugh.
  18. — The township numbers about 2,000 inhabitants; its elected officers for the year are Justices of the Peace William Barber, David G. Perry, and Robert Morrison, Trustees John Vancuran, James Dallas, and Hugh Barber, and Constables F. Conner and David L. Wilson.
  19. — The township census is 1,482, down 518 from 2,000 in 1890.

Stories

A drummer's call to arms

Robert Mitchell, an early settler at Morristown within the township, had served as a drummer in the Revolutionary War; family tradition preserved by his descendants recalled that his wife considered cutting patches and molding bullets for soldiers in 1776 the hardest day's work she ever did. During the War of 1812, the aging Mitchell beat his drum through Morristown to call for recruits. His method was simple and theatrical: he would drum until a crowd gathered, then stop, lay the drum on the ground with a silver coin balanced on its head, and declare that whoever stepped up and lifted the coin was thereby enlisted for service. Early Union Township also saw a mail robbery on Boden Hill in February 1818, when two men named Arnold and Williams tied the postal carrier to a tree, stole his shoes, and left him barefoot in the snow; a posse from Morristown eventually captured Arnold in Jefferson County and Williams in Virginia, though Williams later broke jail and was never recaptured.

The mail carrier left barefoot in the snow

One morning in February 1818 the United States mail rider was stopped on Boden hill, near Morristown, by two men named Arnold and Williams. They pulled him from his horse, tied him to a tree with his own bridle, took his shoes, went through the mail and left him barefoot in the snow. Somehow he freed himself, walked into Morristown and raised the alarm, and a party of men set out at once after the robbers. Arnold was caught in Jefferson County and Williams was taken elsewhere; both were jailed, but Williams broke out and was never heard of again. Arnold stood trial, was convicted and was sent to the penitentiary, where he died. The account was given to the 1880 county historian by John Lippencott, whose family kept the Morristown hotel from 1815 until 1865.
