How Cheshire Township, Gallia County began
Cheshire Township occupies the northeastern corner of Gallia County along the Ohio River, marking both the county's farthest-east point and its farthest-upstream river township. It was formed from the earlier Kyger Township March 3, 1811, and its first settlement dates to about 1794, when a group including Abram and Paul Darst and Adam Rousch built cabins on the riverbank near the future village of Cheshire. The village of Cheshire sits in the township's southeast, with the smaller village of Kyger (laid out 1842) near its center; the rest is farmland, notable in the 19th century for the Ohio Blue Sulphur Springs, a pair of mineral springs whose water was analyzed and recommended for medicinal use. The township borders Meigs County, and several place names and buildings tied to its shared ZIP codes -- including the village of Middleport and buildings there -- actually belong to Meigs County rather than to Cheshire Township or Gallia County.
Settled c. 1794, incorporated 1811-03-03 (formed from Kyger Township), by First cabins built by Paul and Abram Darst, Adam Rousch and Edward McMullen.
Where the name comes from
No source found explains why Cheshire Township was given its name specifically; it is the only township named "Cheshire" in Ohio. The village of Cheshire within it is separately documented as named for the county of Cheshire, England, and the township's name likely derives from the same source, though no source confirms that link directly. The 1882 county history, read in full for this township, gives the township's formation from Kyger Township but likewise does not address the name choice.
Before the town
No source found records a Native village, mound, trail, or treaty event specific to Cheshire Township. The township lies within Gallia County's broader Shawnee homeland of the pre-1795 Ohio River valley.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee.

Stories
The Blue Sulphur Springs
For more than half a century before 1882, a pair of mineral springs in Cheshire Township -- known locally as the Ohio Blue Sulphur Springs -- had a neighborhood reputation for medicinal value, though the 1882 county history reports that their particular properties had only recently been established by formal analysis. A Professor Wayne examined water from the two springs and reported them as distinct: spring number one he judged well suited to treating rheumatic conditions and disorders of the stomach and bowels, describing it as mild, pleasant and safe to drink freely; spring number two he found much higher in lime salts and iron oxide, classing it as a chalybeate (iron-bearing) medicinal water valuable in its own right. Physician James Johnson and others were reported to recommend the springs to patients. We found no later source saying whether the springs ever developed into a resort or remain identifiable today.
