How Green Township, Gallia County began

Green Township sits at the geographic center of Gallia County, one of only two of the county's fifteen townships that touches no other county. It was set off from Gallipolis Township and organized June 12, 1809, with part of Raccoon Township added that September. Frederick Kerns, who built a cabin on what became the Warren Hulbert farm, was the first settler; the first religious society, formed in 1818 and named "Alexander Church" for early settler and Revolutionary War veteran Alexander Waddell, grew into the Centenary Methodist congregation that gave the Centenary community its name -- today home since the 1950s to Gallia Academy High School and to Centenary Cemetery, one of the county's older burial grounds. The township has never held an incorporated village of its own; its two 19th-century villages, Rodney (laid out 1830) and Northup, remain unincorporated hamlets along Raccoon Creek.

Settled early (Frederick Kerns built the first cabin, on what is now the Warren Hulbert farm), incorporated 1809-06-12, by Set off from Gallipolis Township; first settler Frederick Kerns.

Where the name comes from

No source found records why Green Township was given its name specifically; it is one of sixteen townships named "Green" across Ohio, a common township name statewide, and no local explanation of the choice survives in the sources checked, including the township's own 1882 county-history chapter, which describes its organization and settlement in detail but does not address the name.

Before the town

No source found records a Native village, mound, trail, or treaty event specific to Green Township. The township lies within Gallia County's broader Shawnee homeland of the pre-1795 Ohio River valley.

Timeline

  1. — Green Township is set off from Gallipolis Township and organized; that September a part of Raccoon Township is added to it. The first election is held June 24, 1809 at the house of Nicholas Thevenin, who is elected justice of the peace.
  2. — Robert Safford builds the township's first grist mill, a frame building run by horsepower.
  3. — Nicholas Thevenin erects the township's first saw mill, on the banks of Big Raccoon creek; the same year the first school is taught in a log cabin on Little Chickamauga creek, its door made of riven boards and its windows openings covered in oiled paper.
  4. — The township's first religious services are held in the house of one of the Waddell family, preached by Methodist minister Rev. Jacob Delay, who forms a Methodist society named "Alexander Church" for member Alexander Waddell; a third church organized later in the township, about three and a half miles west of Gallipolis, becomes known as the Centenary Church, giving its name to the Centenary community.
  5. — Jacob Bosworth organizes and superintends the township's first Sabbath school.
  6. — Henry Coverstone lays out the village of Rodney in the township's northwest part; by 1882 it has a store, blacksmith shop, wagon shop, Methodist Episcopal church, school house and post office, with about 100 residents. The village of Northup, on Raccoon creek in the township's south part, is laid out by John S. Northup and takes his family name.
  7. — Centenary Cemetery, in the township's Centenary community, is already an established burial ground, later catalogued in the Ohio Genealogical Society's statewide cemetery survey.
  8. — Wood Old Homestead, listed on the National Register this year, is confirmed to lie in neighboring Raccoon Township rather than Green Township, despite sharing a mailing ZIP code with parts of Green Township.
  9. — Green Township records a census population of 5,357, the largest of Gallia County's fifteen townships and the only one without an incorporated village inside it.

Stories

A powder-horn from Point Pleasant

Alexander Waddell was born in Scotland in 1732 and held membership in the Methodist Episcopal church for seventy-two years. According to the 1882 county history, he fought under George Washington in the Revolutionary War and was also a soldier in the War of 1812, and the same account places him at the battle of Point Pleasant, present-day West Virginia, in October 1774 -- though that battle is more commonly dated to the same period as, but classified separately from, the Revolutionary War proper (it is usually called part of Lord Dunmore's War), a distinction the 1882 source does not draw. Waddell's descendants in Green Township kept, with evident pride, a powder-horn he was said to have carried on that occasion. He was buried in a family burial ground on what became the Warren Hulbert farm, under a stone reading: "A man that fought for liberty, but now his soul doth rest in peace." The Methodist society organized in the township in 1818 was named "Alexander Church" in his honor.
