How Morgan Township, Gallia County began

Morgan Township lies in the northern part of Gallia County, bordering Salem Township in Meigs County to the north, with no incorporated village of its own. Dr. Ryan built the township's first cabin in 1800, and the township was organized March 8, 1818. Its documented 19th-century record is otherwise a typical rural one -- mills, a log schoolhouse, small post offices and a scatter of small churches -- and it remains today rural farmland served by the Leading Creek Conservancy District's rural water system.

Settled 1800, incorporated 1818-03-08, by First cabin built by Dr. Ryan.

Stories

Morgan comes up Campaign Creek

The township's one big day in the Civil War came in July 1863. The 1882 county history says part of John Hunt Morgan's force crossed Raccoon, Huntington, Morgan and Cheshire townships to the Ohio River, tried to cross, and was caught by Union forces; more than two hundred were captured in the upper end of Addison Township. Morgan himself, with the main body, went up Campaign Creek, which runs through the center of Morgan Township, passed through Addison, Morgan and Huntington townships, and rode through Ewington, where he took a company of militia from Portsmouth and the ammunition he badly needed before turning north toward Columbiana County, where he was captured. Farmers along the way were forced to trade horses with the raiders. The history praises the speed with which the militia gathered at Gallipolis, which Morgan was thought to be aiming at. For the township this was the largest outside event of the century, in a record otherwise of log schools, water mills and small churches.
