How Middleport began

Middleport grew from the Leading Creek Settlement of 1798, one of the earliest pioneer footholds in what became Meigs County, settled by New Englanders and Revolutionary War veterans who arrived by flatboat from Marietta, followed later by German immigrants. Originally called the Leading Creek Settlement, the village eventually took in neighboring settlements called Vinton, Sheffield, Tarker's Landing and Coalport. It grew into a river commerce and small-industry town, peaking at 3,772 residents in 1920 before a century of gradual decline to 2,208 by 2020. Three of its 19th-century buildings, including a Carnegie-era public library, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Settled 1798, by New England and Revolutionary War veteran settlers of the Leading Creek Settlement.

Where the name comes from

The village began as the Leading Creek Settlement and eventually encompassed settlements called Vinton, Sheffield, Tarker's Landing and Coalport; the origin of the name Middleport itself is not recorded.

Before the town

No source consulted documents a specific Native American village, camp, trail or burial site at the location of Middleport itself. The village sits at the mouth of Leading Creek on the Ohio River, opposite Mason County, West Virginia, in a stretch of river valley that was within the territory the United States treated as ceded by the Treaty of Fort McIntosh (1785) and Treaty of Fort Harmar (1789) -- agreements the Shawnee and Miami disputed -- and confirmed by the Treaty of Greenville (1795). The broader Ohio River valley in this stretch was long used and traveled by Shawnee, Wyandot, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga) and other nations, but no source found here places a named settlement or site within what is now Middleport.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Wyandot, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories

Johnny Appleseed, concrete, and a new faith in Middleport

William H. Grant built himself a house in Middleport in 1852 using concrete on a sandstone foundation, only the second concrete building raised anywhere in Meigs County -- an unusual choice of material for its time and place. The Grant family had converted to Swedenborgianism, a faith with roots in the visionary theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, after a visit to the area by John Chapman -- Johnny Appleseed -- who was himself a committed Swedenborgian missionary as well as an orchardist. The Grants used their new concrete house as a meeting place for the small local following the faith gathered in Middleport, a domestic building doing double duty as the village's first Swedenborgian gathering place. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

49,831 days of records, 1890-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
