How Addison Township, Gallia County began
Addison Township sits in northeastern Gallia County on the Ohio River across from Mason County, West Virginia. Hezekiah Frazer built its first cabin about 1795, near where the Bethel church later stood, and the township was organized March 3, 1811. Its village of Addison, laid out by Reuben Rothgeb on land owned by Robert Reynolds, John Lanks and William Watson, sits on the river eight miles north of Gallipolis and never incorporated. Kanauga, a small unincorporated riverside community that lies partly in Addison Township, gave its name to the Ohio end of the Silver Bridge, which collapsed in 1967.
Settled c. 1795, incorporated 1811-03-03, by First cabin built by Hezekiah Frazer.
Where the name comes from
The origin of the township name Addison is not recorded.
Before the town
No source records a Native village, mound, trail, or treaty event specific to Addison Township. The name "Kanauga," for the township's main riverside community, is documented in Wikipedia as being of obscure origin -- it is not confirmed as a Native-language name despite its similarity to "Kanawha," the West Virginia river just across the Ohio; that similarity is not asserted as a confirmed etymology here. The township lies within Gallia County's broader Shawnee homeland of the pre-1795 Ohio River valley.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee.

Stories
Two hundred raiders caught on the river road
Addison Township runs for six and a quarter miles along the Ohio, and in July 1863 that shore became the end of the line for part of Morgan's Raid. The 1882 county history says one body of the raiders crossed Huntington, Morgan and Cheshire townships to the river and tried to cross, but seeing a tow-boat above Eight Mile Island that they took for a gunboat, they turned down the river and were overtaken by Union forces. More than two hundred were captured in the upper end of Addison Township. The main body under Morgan meanwhile rode up Campaign Creek, through Addison, Morgan and Huntington townships, and escaped north. The captured men, 209 in all, were put aboard the steamer Bertha and sent down the Ohio to Cincinnati under guard, and a few tried to escape on the way.
