How Summit Township, Monroe County began
Summit Township, organized June 4, 1850 and named for the high ridge from which its waters flow toward several creek systems, was Monroe County's second-to-last township formed. Settlement began about 1814 with Ephraim Rucker, from Virginia, and Mollie McBrides, from Pennsylvania, who settled north of the future village of Lewisville in a spot still remembered locally as 'Mollie's Garden.' Lewisville itself, the township's only village, hosted the township's first election in September 1850 and grew to a nineteenth-century peak before settling into the slow population decline typical of Monroe County's rural townships.
Settled c. 1814 (Ephraim Rucker; Mollie McBrides), incorporated 1850-06-04 (township organized).
Where the name comes from
Summit Township was named for the high ridge on which it sits, from which water flows into multiple surrounding creek systems.

Stories
Mollie's Garden
Long before Summit Township organized in 1850, the ridge-top ground north of what became Lewisville was known informally as 'Mollie's Garden,' named for Mollie McBrides, a Pennsylvania settler who arrived around 1814 alongside Virginian Ephraim Rucker on the far western side of the future township. The name stuck in local memory even after Summit Township took its own, more geographic name -- a small example of how Monroe County's landscape carried two layers of naming, the practical township names chosen by county commissioners and the older, more personal names settlers gave to the specific ground they broke first.
