How Seneca Township, Monroe County began
Seneca Township, organized July 19, 1815 as one of Monroe County's original four townships, sits in the county's northwest along branches of Will's Creek. Andrew Dilley built a cabin at what became Calais around 1798 but returned to Belmont County; John Dailey arrived in March 1802 and became the area's first permanent settler, taking over Dilley's old cabin. John Dailey later platted the village of Calais in 1837, and the township's name -- shared with the Seneca nation, one of the Six Nations whose Mingo descendants ranged this part of the upper Ohio valley -- is not explained by any source consulted.

Where the name comes from
No source consulted explains the origin of the township name 'Seneca'; the name matches that of the Seneca nation, whose descendants (with Cayuga) formed the Mingo people who ranged the upper Ohio valley, but no source ties the naming decision to that history.
Before the town
No source consulted names a Native American village, camp or mound specific to Seneca Township, despite the township's own name matching that of the Seneca nation (whose descendants, with the Cayuga, made up the Mingo people recorded across this part of eastern Ohio). Stories
The man who came back
Andrew Dilley was, by the township's own reckoning, its very first settler, building a cabin at the future site of Calais around 1798 -- fifteen years before Monroe County existed and while this stretch of the Ohio country was still raw frontier. But Dilley did not stay; he returned to Belmont County, leaving his cabin standing empty. It was John Dailey, arriving in March 1802, who moved into Dilley's abandoned structure and became the township's first settler to actually remain, going on to raise a family, help organize the township's first government in 1815, and finally plat the village of Calais himself in 1837 -- effectively founding, a second time and for good, the same spot Dilley had tried and abandoned a generation earlier.
