How Niles began

Niles began in 1806 when James Heaton built a log home and, within a year, a forge, grist mill and dam on Mosquito Creek, one of the earliest iron-processing operations in Ohio; the settlement was first called Heaton's Furnace, then Nilestown after Hezekiah Niles, editor of the influential Weekly Register magazine, before the name was shortened to Niles in 1843. That same year, William McKinley, the future twenty-fifth president, was born in the town to a family of iron-founders. Niles grew through the 1800s and early 1900s as an iron, steel and glass manufacturing center on the Mahoning River, survived a catastrophic 1913 flood and a violent 1924 Ku Klux Klan riot, and today is remembered nationally chiefly as McKinley's birthplace, honored by the Beaux-Arts National McKinley Birthplace Memorial completed in 1917.

Settled 1806, by James Heaton, incorporated 1834 (village); later became a city, by James Heaton.

Where the name comes from

The settlement was first called Heaton's Furnace for founder James Heaton's ironworks, then renamed Nilestown for Hezekiah Niles, editor of the nationally influential Weekly Register magazine; the name was shortened to simply Niles in 1843, the year William McKinley was born there.

Before the town

No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to the Niles town site is recorded in the sources we reviewed. Niles sits directly on Mosquito Creek and the Mahoning River, within the same valley the county's 1882 history describes as Delaware-occupied hunting territory used seasonally by Seneca and Mingo bands through the 1700s, but no source found names a town or camp at the specific site of Heaton's 1806 furnace. Native title to the Western Reserve, including the Niles site, was extinguished by the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry, the year before Heaton's settlement began.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Timeline

  1. — James Heaton founds the settlement that becomes Niles, building a log home and soon a forge, dam and mill race on Mosquito Creek; his works produce one of Ohio's first bar iron.
  2. — William McKinley, later the 25th president of the United States, is born in Niles, the seventh of nine children of an iron-founding family; the town's name is shortened from Nilestown to Niles the same year.
  3. — The McKinley family leaves Niles for Poland, Ohio, so their children can attend better schools.
  4. — A national economic depression devastates Niles's iron firms, forcing a shift toward steel, glass and galvanizing industries by the early 1900s.
  5. — The Great Flood begins on Easter Sunday; the Mahoning River and Mosquito Creek flood Niles as part of a disaster that kills 428 Ohioans statewide and causes over $3 million in local damage.
  6. — The cornerstone is laid for the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial in downtown Niles, championed by industrialist Joseph G. Butler Jr.
  7. — The McKinley memorial is dedicated; former president William Howard Taft speaks and McKinley's sister Helen unveils the twelve-foot statue by J. Massey Rhind.
  8. — Rioting breaks out over a scheduled Ku Klux Klan march and an anti-Klan counter-march, resulting in 18 hours of violence, 104 indictments and the declaration of martial law.
  9. — The National McKinley Birthplace Memorial is added to the National Register of Historic Places.
  10. — An F5 tornado strikes Niles, destroying homes, businesses and a skating rink, killing nine people and injuring 250.

Stories

The town that named itself for an editor and then for its own son

James Heaton's 1806 ironworks settlement was first known simply as Heaton's Furnace, but the community that grew up around his forge and gristmill on Mosquito Creek renamed itself Nilestown, honoring Hezekiah Niles, the Baltimore editor whose Weekly Register was, in the early 1800s, one of the most influential news magazines in the country -- an unusual choice for a small Ohio iron town to pay tribute to a man who likely never set foot there. The name shortened to plain Niles in 1843, the same year the town produced a homegrown claim to fame that eclipsed any editor's: William McKinley was born there on January 29, the seventh of nine children in an iron-founding family much like Heaton's own. The family left for Poland, Ohio, when McKinley was nine, and his political career -- Ohio congressman, governor, and from 1897 president -- unfolded almost entirely elsewhere. But after his 1901 assassination, Niles reclaimed him decisively: industrialist Joseph G. Butler Jr. drove a fundraising and design effort that produced, by 1917, a Beaux-Arts marble memorial on the scale of a small state capitol, complete with library, museum and statue, for the ironworking town's most famous native son.

Eighteen hours in November

In November 1924, a scheduled march by the Ku Klux Klan through Niles, met by an organized anti-Klan counter-demonstration, tipped into roughly eighteen hours of street rioting -- serious enough that Ohio's governor declared martial law and the courts eventually handed down 104 indictments. The episode is a reminder that the Klan's 1920s resurgence reached deep into industrial Ohio mill towns like Niles, not only the rural South, and that local resistance to it could be organized and violent in equal measure. It came a little more than a decade after the town's other defining twentieth-century disaster, the Great Flood of March 1913, when the Mahoning River and Mosquito Creek together did more than $3 million in damage to Niles as part of a flood that killed 428 people across Ohio -- back-to-back reminders, industrial collapse and civil violence bookending a natural disaster, of how turbulent the Mahoning Valley's first quarter of the twentieth century actually was.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Niles, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

49,113 days of records, 1892-05-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
