How Wyoming began

The Pendery family were among the area's earliest European American settlers, arriving in 1805, but the community took its present name and identity only in 1861, when residents gathered at the home of Robert Reily -- later remembered as the "Father of Wyoming" -- one week before the Civil War began, to choose a name recalling Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, some settlers' former home (itself named from a Lenape term meaning "large plains"). The Miami and Erie Canal (1828) and the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad (1851) made the area attractive to wealthy Cincinnati industrialists, who built country estates here through the late 1800s; eight of those houses, including the homes of U.S. Representative Jacob Bromwell and inventor-industrialist Josiah Kirby, were added to the National Register of Historic Places together on August 25, 1986. Wyoming incorporated as a village in 1861 and became a city in 1951, growing from 600 residents in 1874 to 8,756 by 2020.

Settled 1805 (Pendery family), incorporated village, 1861; city, 1951, by named by residents gathered at Robert Reily's home.

Where the name comes from

Residents chose the name Wyoming in 1861, meeting at the home of Robert Reily one week before the Civil War began, after Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, where some early settlers had come from. "Wyoming" itself derives from a Lenape (Delaware) term meaning "large plains," originally describing the Wyoming Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania rather than any place in Ohio.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, or documented encounter specific to Wyoming, Ohio itself was found in the sources consulted; the town's name is borrowed at one remove from a Lenape place name in Pennsylvania, brought west by settlers rather than reflecting any local Native presence.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

Stories

A congressman's house in a company town's shadow

Jacob Bromwell was still teaching school in southern Indiana and Cincinnati in 1876 when he built the Italianate house at 69 Mt. Pleasant Avenue that would later carry his name -- an L-shaped, two-story house with a distinctive oculus window set into its front gable, unremarkable among the country houses Cincinnati's wealthier residents were building in Wyoming for its easy rail access to the city and its proximity to the growing industrial works at nearby Lockland. Bromwell was not wealthy in the way most of his Wyoming neighbors were, but he built a different kind of local prominence: he served as Wyoming's own mayor from 1880 to 1886, sat as a common pleas court judge, and in 1894 won election to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving until 1903. His house survives alongside seven of his neighbors' -- among them Josiah Kirby, an industrialist and state senator whose machinery inventions and railroad-executive career made him one of the region's leading businessmen -- all eight added to the National Register together in 1986 as a single record of the country-estate era that built the town.

Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
