How Colerain Township, Hamilton County began

Colerain Township traces to one of the earliest and most dangerous settlement attempts on the Ohio frontier: surveyor John Dunlap, an Ulster Scots-Irish immigrant, laid out a station on the east bank of the Great Miami River in early 1790 and named it for his birthplace, Coleraine in County Londonderry, Ireland. The township organized formally in 1794, a few years after Dunlap's Station survived a major siege by a Northwestern Confederacy war party in January 1791. It remained rural into the 20th century before booming after World War II, its population rising from 7,473 in 1950 to 28,632 by 1960 and to 59,239 by 2020, now covering communities such as Dry Ridge, Groesbeck, Northgate, and Bevis on Cincinnati's northwest side. A prehistoric earthwork, the Colerain Works, survives on farmland along the river north of the old station site.

Settled early 1790 (Dunlap's Station), platted 1790 (village of Colerain, laid out by John Dunlap), incorporated 1794 (township organized), by John Dunlap, under Judge John Cleves Symmes's Miami Purchase.

Where the name comes from

The township and its original station were named for Coleraine, County Londonderry, Ireland, the birthplace of surveyor John Dunlap, who laid out the settlement in 1790 for Judge John Cleves Symmes's Miami Company.

Before the town

Colerain Township holds a prehistoric earthwork, the Colerain Works, on the east bank of the Great Miami River north of the old Dunlap's Station site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 18, 1976; the sources consulted describe it only as an archaeological district of earthworks and do not name the specific mound-building culture responsible, so it is recorded here without an assigned period. In the historic period, Dunlap's Station itself was the site of a major action of the Northwest Indian War: on January 10-11, 1791, some 300 to 500 warriors of the Northwestern Confederacy -- Shawnee, Miami, Lenape, Wyandot, Potawatomi, Odawa, and Ojibwe fighters under the Shawnee war leader Blue Jacket -- besieged about 30 American defenders at the station for roughly two hours before withdrawing as reinforcements approached from Fort Washington. Two days earlier the same force had attacked a surveying party outside the station, killing one man and capturing surveyor Abner Hunt, who was killed, reportedly after torture, during the siege.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Miami, Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot, Ottawa, Hopewell culture.

Stories

A two-hour siege on the Great Miami

In January 1791, less than a year after John Dunlap's surveying party built their station on the Great Miami River, it became one of the deadliest fronts of the Northwest Indian War. On January 8, a war party ambushed a group of surveyors working outside the stockade, killing one man on the spot and dragging off another, Abner Hunt, as a captive. Two days later, an estimated 300 to 500 warriors from the Northwestern Confederacy -- Shawnee, Miami, Lenape, Wyandot, Potawatomi, Odawa, and Ojibwe fighters -- surrounded the station under the Shawnee leader Blue Jacket. Inside, roughly 30 defenders under Lieutenant Jacob Kingsbury held the line while women inside melted pewter spoons into musket balls and men reinforced the log walls against entry. The attackers used the captive Hunt to try to talk the garrison into surrendering; when that failed, he was killed within sight and earshot of the fort, under circumstances Kingsbury's own report called murder. The siege lasted about two hours before the attackers withdrew near 8 a.m. on January 11, as word reached them that reinforcements were marching up from Fort Washington in Cincinnati. Two Americans died in the fighting to a dozen or more Native casualties, and Dunlap's Station -- one of the few frontier outposts in the Symmes Purchase to survive an organized siege intact -- was still judged too exposed to hold, and was abandoned more than once before the frontier war finally ended.
